Ole Miss Scored 23 Points in Weight Throw with Two Medalists and Four Scorers
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Ole Miss track & field received a dominant performance in the women's weight throw to cap a successful weekend of action at the 2020 SEC Indoor Championships on Saturday.
Junior Shey Taiwo and freshman Jasmine Mitchell led a powerful group of Rebel women in the weight throw that scored a combined 23 points – tied for the most scored in an event by a single team at the meet. Taiwo took command of the competition immediately and led wire-to-wire, jumping into the lead on her first throw of the day at 22.67m (74-04.50) before improving on her fifth attempt of 22.72m (74-06.50) – a career-best that improves upon her standing in second all-time at Ole Miss and fourth in the NCAA this season.
The win for Taiwo marks the third women's weight title in the last four years for Ole Miss after All-American Janeah Stewart claimed titles in 2017 and 2018. Taiwo is also just the fifth Rebel woman to ever win an SEC title indoors, and her win Saturday is the ninth total SEC Indoor win for the Ole Miss women.
Mitchell was in lock-step with Taiwo the whole way, sitting in second place after her first throw of 20.69m (67-10.75) before improving to her best of the day on her next attempt of 21.15m (69-04.75) that ended up being good for a silver medal. Junior Deborah Bulai took fifth at 20.84m (68-04.50), and freshman Jalani Davis was able to snag one point in eighth place on a new PR of almost six feet on her first attempt throw of 19.92m (65-04.25). Ole Miss almost had a fifth make the final as well, but sophomore Tedreauna Britt narrowly missed out in 10th place at a PR of 19.26m (63-02.25).
Ole Miss received another blistering performance on the track from sophomore Jayda Eckford, who less than 24 hours after dismantling Teneeshia Jones' 2001 school record in the 200-meter dash decided to topple her own record. Running in the second heat of the final, Eckford ran 23.18 to break her day-old school record and almost assuredly punch her ticket for the NCAA Championships. As of Saturday night, her time ranks within the needed top-16 nationally at No. 9.
Junior Waleed Suliman was the busiest Rebel of the weekend, running in two additional races on Saturday after running a mile prelim and the anchor leg of the Rebel men's SEC title distance medley relay squad on Friday. Suliman got caught in the middle of the pack in a tactical mile final on Saturday, finishing fourth at 4:15.64. Junior Everett Smulders was right behind him in fifth place at 4:15.67, giving Ole Miss nine total points from the event.
Suliman also scored for the Rebels in the men's 3K final on Saturday, finishing seventh at 8:13.74. In total, Suliman scored 9.5 points across three events this weekend.
Fellow junior John Rivera Jr. just narrowly missed the podium in the men's 800-meter final, falling four hundredths of a second shy in fourth place at 1:50.24 to score five points for Ole Miss. The Rebel women received four additional points in the distance events as well, with junior Maddie King finishing fifth at 4:49.03.
Other Rebel scorers on Day Two included sophomore Joseph Benedetto in the men's weight throw (sixth, 19.73m/64-08.75) and junior Allen Gordon in the men's high jump (seventh, 2.11m/6-11.00).
In the team standings, the Rebel men finished eighth overall with 41 points (beating out No. 23 Alabama and No. 6 Georgia along the way), while the No. 20 Ole Miss women finished in a tie for eighth place with Tennessee at 43 points.
Ole Miss track & field now looks ahead to the NCAA Indoor Championships, which will take place March 13-14 in Albuquerque, N.M. Qualifying lists for the national meet will be released in the coming days.
