Allee’s Big Day at the Plate Not Enough for Ole Miss
CLEARWATER, Fla. – Ole Miss (0-4) battled hard in a pair of closely-contested games on Saturday but came up on the wrong end of both, dropping results to Illinois (2-0) and Notre Dame (2-2) on day two of the NFCA Leadoff Classic.
Mikayla Allee was white-hot at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a pair of walks. However, much like the day before, clutch hitting was the difference as Ole Miss left 14 runners on base.
GAME ONE | vs. Illinois
A three-run second inning came back to bite the Rebels in the early game against Illinois, with the Fighting Illini taking the win by a score of 3-1.
All three runs were charged to Ava Tillmann, who took the loss after allowing two hits and three walks. Anna Borgen came in and righted the ship out of the bullpen, throwing up 4.2 scoreless frames with six strikeouts.
After cruising through the opening frame, Tillmann began to struggle with her command in the second, hitting the leadoff hitter before a fielding error and three-straight walks brought a pair of runs home. Illinois added another shortly thereafter with a single to center.
Paige Smith delivered a sacrifice fly to left in the fourth, scoring Sydney Gutierrez to bring the deficit down to two. Ole Miss put runners at the corners in the sixth but were unable to cash in on the opportunity. The Rebels went down quietly in the seventh as Illinois picked up their second win of the season.
GAME TWO | vs. Notre Dame
Ole Miss jumped ahead early but was unable to hold off Notre Dame's comeback attempt, dropping the second game of the day 5-7.
Molly Jacobsen made the start in the circle, throwing 4.1 innings with six runs allowed in the losing effort. Savannah Diederich tossed 2.2 innigs in relief, surrendering one unearned run.
After waiting until late to get the offense rolling in both ends of yesterday's doubleheader, the Rebs got off to a hot start against the Fighting Irish, striking for four runs in the opening frame to seize control of the matchup.
Tate Whitley wasted no time in starting the charge, laying down a bunt single as the leadoff. Allee followed with a single up the middle before Jessica Puk laced a double to the left field wall to bring Whitley around. Allee beat the toss home on Gabby Alvarez's sacrifice bunt to tack on a second run and Smith tallied a double of her own, scoring Puk. Autumn Gillespie brought home the final run, scratching Nyomi Jones across on a gound out.
Notre Dame responded immediately, cutting the lead in half with a two-run double off the bat of Brooke Marquez.
A few innings later, the lead was gone. The first three batters of the fifth inning reached for Notre Dame and the Fighting Irish eventually plated four runs to take a 6-4 lead.
After Ole Miss cut the lead down to a single on Puk's RBI single in the bottom of the fifth, an error in the field proved costly as Notre Dame re-extended the advantage to two on Marquez's single down the right line.
The Rebels put themselves in prime position to tie the game in the bottom half of the sixth, with Smith and Gillespie leading of with singles before moving over on a sacrifice bunt. However, a strikeout and fly out ended the threat with the score holding at 5-7 in favor of the Fighting Irish.
Allee led off the seventh with a single but Ole Miss was unable to advance any further, succumbing to the Notre Dame rally victory.
Ole Miss returns to the Eddie C. Moore Complex on Sunday to round out the NFCA D1 Leadoff Classic, taking on Liberty at 9 a.m. CT.
