Rebels Wrap Up Play in California

Sophomore Jackson Suber Finishes Tied for 12th Overall
CHULA VISTA, Calif. – The No. 42 Ole Miss men's golf team wrapped up play at the Lamkin San Diego Classic Tuesday afternoon.
The Rebels ended with a 3-under 285 Tuesday, and went 10-over (281-308-285—874) through the two days of competition to finish in a tie for 10th overall. No. 37 Tennessee took home the team title at 8-under, while San Francisco's Tim Widing was medalist at 8-under.
Ole Miss tallied 58 birdies over the three rounds, the second-most in the field, and played the par 5s at 17-under.
"I was proud of the way our guys rallied towards the end of our round today," head coach Chris Malloy said. "We got off to a terrible start on the easiest stretch of holes and could have given in, but they did anything but that. That is what we have been looking for with this group, and we may have just found something that will help us as we gear up to make a postseason run."
"This was an NCAA type field and certainly a championship course. I could easily schedule courses and fields that are easy and familiar to our guys. However, that's not what we do here at Ole Miss. We challenge our guys and really get them outside of their comfort zone to prepare them for what they are going to see in April and May. I know that it may be hard to see it from the outside, but there is no doubt in my mind that we got better this week."
Suber paced the team in scoring for the fifth time this season in eight events. The sophomore tied for 12th with two rounds under par, going 68-78-68—214 (-2). His two 68s (both five birdies, 12 pars and one bogey) were his seventh and eighth rounds in the 60s of the season. Suber led the team in birdies and pars with 13 and 31 respectively, and played the par 5s at 4-under. In the final round, he recorded five birdies and committed only one bogey.
Sarut Vongchaisit shot the second-lowest round of the day for the Rebels, firing a final round 1-under 71. He birdied Nos. 1 and 2 on the front side, while adding another pair of birdies on the back nine. The sophomore finished in a tie for 44th after going 72-77-71—220 to finish at 4-over. Vongchaisit played the par 5s 6-under to lead the team, and was second on the team in pars with 31.
Charlie Miller matched Vongchaisit on the leaderboard after a final round even-par 72. Three bogeys on the back nine evened out three birdies on the front. The sophomore went 69-77-72—220 (+4).
Veeti Mahonen finished in a tie for 55th after a final round 2-over 74. The freshman went 6-over (72-76-74—222) and was second on the team in birdies with 11.
The Rebels return to the course, March 22-24, for the Hootie at Bulls Bay in Charleston, South Carolina.
