Gillespie’s First Inning Dinger Doesn’t Hold Up in Columbia
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Ole Miss was unable to hold on to its early lead in the series finale at No. 23 Missouri, falling 3-1 to the Tigers Sunday afternoon at the Mizzou Softball Stadium.
Molly Jacobsen took the loss in the circle, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits in four-plus innings, striking out four. Ava Tillmann tossed a pair of scoreless frames in relief, surrendering a single hit.
Autumn Gillespie gave the Rebels (12-13, 0-3 SEC) an early lead, launching a Jordan Weber over the left field fence for a solo home run, putting Ole Miss ahead 1-0 after one.
That lead lasted until the fourth inning, when Missouri (19-6, 3-0 SEC) struck for a pair of runs to push ahead. Following a leadoff walk, Cayla Kessinger lined an RBI triple down the left field line, coming home herself on Kimberly Wert's RBI single.
The Rebels responded to put themselves in position to strike back in the fifth, loading the bases on a fielding error and back-to-back infield singles by Mikayla Allee and Gillespie. However, the Tigers got themselves out of the jam with a 1-2-3 double play.
In the bottom half, Missouri added an insurance run on a throwing error. However, Ava Tillmann did well to limit the damage, coming in with the bases loaded and no outs to hold the Tigers to the single run.
