Ole Miss Men and Women Both Took Second at SEC Preview Meet

OXFORD, Miss.Ole Miss associate head coach for cross country Ryan Vanhoy met with members of the media on Monday to recap the SEC Preview meet at LSU this past weekend.

Opening Statement
Men's and women's cross country competed this past Saturday at LSU. We were part of the SEC Preview meet, and what that meet included was five teams from the SEC with Mississippi State, LSU, Ole Miss, Arkansas and Texas A&M. It was a five-team meet on the same course that will host the SEC Championships on October 30. Both teams finished as runners-up at the meet, we came away with the second-place finish to Arkansas on both the men's and women's side.

It was a good showing for us for an early season meet. A lot of times in cross country, the first few meets of the season are a little bit more low-key, you're just trying to figure out your roster a little bit. We held out a few athletes on both sides, two men and three women, that we believe will factor in as scorers for us later in the season. They're taking their time, getting their training volume back up before they debut in uniform here in another meet or two.

We were led on the men's side by Mario Garcia Romo, he actually won the meet individually, but our team on the men's side lost by eight points, 29-37. Pretty close race, it was pretty cool how it unfolded. It was basically just two teams of guys going back and forth all the way to the finish. Good starting point there for the men's side.

On the women's side, Arkansas are the defending national champions. Very tough competitors every time we're on the course with them. They ran very strong, and to be honest, we ran pretty well too, but just not enough to impact the team scoring there against the Razorbacks. Again, we held out three of our best girls who are working their way back, so I feel like once we can work them back into the mix here in a couple weeks we'll be a lot stronger as a group, but also more fit and more ready to compete as we get closer to the end of the season.

Our next competition will be in two weeks at Louisville. They're putting together a meet of ACC and SEC teams, so we'll hope to compete against some good quality competition there and keep our eyes focused on the end of the season, October 30, in Baton Rouge.
