Garcia Romo Won Individual 6K Title at SEC Preview Last Week

NEW ORLEANS – Ole Miss cross country junior Mario Garcia Romo has been named the USTFCCCA Men's National Athlete of the Week, the association announced Tuesday.

Garcia Romo – a native of Salamanca, Spain and two-time NCAA All-South Region honoree – led the way for the Rebel men at LSU's SEC Preview meet last Saturday, winning his first career individual title with the SEC's top 6K time of 17:23.3. He edged out Arkansas' Emmanuel Cheboson by two seconds for the win in what ended up being a heavyweight bout between the Rebels and Razorbacks to open the 2020 season. Ole Miss, winners of the past two SEC men's titles, finished a narrow second to Arkansas in the team standings by a score of 29-37.

Garcia Romo is the second Rebel to ever win USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week during the cross country season, the last being All-American Sean Tobin on Oct. 3, 2016. Ole Miss also holds two National Athlete of the Week honors from the 2016 indoor season from NCAA Champion and Olympian, Raven Saunders (Feb. 2, Feb. 16).

Ole Miss men's and women's cross country will take off this week before traveling to Louisville for the Greater Louisville Classic on Oct. 3.
