Junior Mario Garcia Romo Won Men’s 6K Individual Title
BATON ROUGE, La. – Ole Miss men's and women's cross country put forth a solid open to the season at LSU's SEC Preview, with the Rebels finishing runner-up in both races on Saturday morning.
"It was really nice to get back in the competitive arena this weekend," said Ole Miss associate head coach Ryan Vanhoy. "We got a chance to see where we are as a team, and an opportunity to preview the SEC Championship course. We look forward to continuing to build over the next six weeks and returning here on October 30."
Junior Mario Garcia Romo, a two-time NCAA All-South Region honoree, led the Rebels in a fierce competition with Arkansas in the men's 6K race to start the day. Garcia Romo won his first career individual title by two seconds over Arkansas' Emmanuel Cheboson at 17:23.3 – one of three Rebels in the top-10 – but the Razorbacks edged out the Rebels in the team race by a score of 29-37.
Two-time All-American and senior Waleed Suliman was in the lead pack as well, finishing fourth in his opening race of 2020 at 17:27.9. Sophomore and reigning SEC Freshman of the Year Cole Bullock also put together a solid season opener in fifth place at 17:32.3. Other Rebel scorers included senior Michael Coccia in 13th place (18:03.5) and junior Dalton Hengst in 14th place (18:10.5).
Saturday's race between the Rebels and Razorbacks sets up an intriguing rematch on this same LSU course for the 2020 SEC Championships on October 30. Ole Miss has won each of the last two SEC team titles in 2018 and 2019. Arkansas had won all eight years prior to 2018, and has not gone more than two years without an SEC title since 1990.
The Ole Miss women had a strong season opening race themselves, but ran into a powerful response from the defending national champion Arkansas women, who posted a perfect score of 15 after placing all five of their scorers in the top-five. The Rebels, meanwhile, tallied 46 points after placing all five of their scorers within the top-12 positions.
Senior Anna Elkin, last season's top NCAA finisher for Ole Miss and an NCAA All-South Region runner, led the way again in sixth place at 17:20.7. Sophomore and 2019 SEC Freshman of the Year Skylar Boogerd was right behind her in seventh place at 17:27.3. Other Rebel scorers included 2019 All-SEC runner Victoria Simmons in 10th (17:38.0), newcomer Ryann Helmers in 11th (17:39.3) and senior Nicole Rice in 12th (17:42.9).
Ole Miss will take next week off before hitting the road to Louisville for the Greater Louisville Classic on Sat., Oct. 3.
