All-American Waleed Suliman Led Rebel Men to 41-Point Win

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Ole Miss men's cross country put in a dominant winning team effort, while the women's team finished a close second at a strong day for the Rebels at Louisville's Live in Lou Classic on Saturday morning.

Two weeks after a heavyweight bout with Arkansas at the SEC Preview, the Rebels took the Men's Gold 8K by storm this week, defeating runners-up Charlotte by a 41-point margin (28-69) thanks to a tight pack of five at the top that all finished within the top-10 and scored just 36 seconds apart.

Two-time All-American and senior Waleed Suliman led the charge, finishing runner-up at 23:36.8 for his second straight top-five finish. Junior Mario Garcia Romo, the USTFCCCA Men's National Athlete of the Week after his performance at the SEC Preview on Sept. 19, was right behind Suliman in third place at 23:41.5. Sophomore Cole Bullock wasn't far away in fourth place at 23:49.1, who was followed by fellow scorers Michael Coccia in ninth place (24:10.0) and Dalton Hengst in 10th place (24:12.9).

Ole Miss put together an impressive late rally over the final kilometer in the Women's Gold 5K race, but ultimately fell just short to Notre Dame by a score of 47-54. Both teams recorded tight scoring spreads, with the Fighting Irish clocking one of 22 seconds for places 6-7-9-12-13 and the Rebels a spread of just 24 seconds for places 5-8-10-15-16.

Senior Anna Elkin was once again the top finisher for the Rebel women, clocking a 5K PR of 17:00.4 in fifth place. Sophomore Skylar Boogerd notched a PR of her own in eighth place at 17:09.0, while senior Victoria Simmons joined her in the top-10 in 10th place at 17:12.8. Redshirt junior Clio Ozanne-Jaques, the top finisher for Ole Miss at both the 2017 and 2018 NCAA Championships, ran for the first time since the 2018 season, taking 15th place and clocking in at 17:24.3 in her first career cross country 5K race. Sophomore Ryann Helmers was the final Rebel scorer in 16th place at a 5K PR of 17:24.3.

Ole Miss will take next week off before traveling over to Birmingham for the UAB Blazer Classic on Fri., Oct. 16.
