Competition Begins with the Women’s Green 6K at 7:45 a.m. CT
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Ole Miss men's and women's cross country will face a powerful field of competitors to close out the regular season at the UAB Blazer Classic on Friday morning.
The field includes seven men's and women's programs that qualified for the NCAA Championships in 2019, including Ole Miss, which stands as one of just four programs nationwide to have qualified both its men and women in each of the last four seasons (alongside BYU, Colorado and Stanford). The Rebel women recorded a program record 21st-place finish at the national meet in 2019, while the Ole Miss men took 22nd overall.
On the women's side, defending national champions Arkansas and Florida State (12th nationally in 2019) will prove stiff competition in the Green 6K race at 7:45 a.m. CT for a hungry Rebel women's squad that is coming off two hard-fought runner-up finishes against the Razorbacks at the SEC Preview on Sept. 19 and to Notre Dame at the Live in Lou Classic on Oct. 3. The Rebels and Seminoles duked it out at the 2019 NCAA South Regional in Tallahassee, with then 12th-ranked Florida State coming out on top.
Senior Anna Elkin has been the top finisher at both meets, recording consecutive top-10 finishes alongside sophomore Skylar Boogerd and senior Victoria Simmons. At Louisville two weeks ago, 2017 and 2018 top NCAA finisher for Ole Miss, Clio Ozanne-Jaques, ran in her first race since the 2018 season, finishing 15th overall at a 5K PR of 17:24.3 – one of nine Rebel women to run a personal best that meet.
The men's Green 8K race at 8:15 a.m. CT will feature similar fireworks with a looming rematch between the Rebels and Razorbacks, as well as fellow 2019 NCAA teams Florida State (29th) and Middle Tennessee (31st). Ole Miss and Arkansas opened up the 2020 season with a heated showdown at the SEC Preview, with the Razorbacks edging the Rebels by just eight points at a score of 29-37. Junior Mario Garcia Romo won the individual title in that 6K race, besting Arkansas' Emmanuel Cheboson by nearly two seconds at the line at 17:23.3 – earning him USTFCCCA National Runner of the Week honors in the process.
Senior and two-time All-American Waleed Suliman has been key for the Rebels as well these first two meets, finishing fourth overall at the SEC Preview before leading Ole Miss at Louisville with a runner-up individual finish that earned him SEC Runner of the Week.
Friday's rematch between Ole Miss and Arkansas gives each team one last look at each other before the two battle it out for the SEC Championship in Baton Rouge on Oct. 30. Ole Miss has won each of the last two SEC men's team titles in 2018 and 2019, but Arkansas had won all eight years prior to 2018 and has not gone more than two years without an SEC title since 1990.
Competition begins with the women's Green 6K race at 7:45 a.m. CT, followed by the men's Green 8K race at 8:15 a.m. CT.
