Women’s Tennis Perseveres Late at Bulldog Kickoff

Rebels Win Seven of Nine Matches to Conclude Bulldog Kickoff
STARKVILLE, Miss. – To close out the opening weekend of the spring season the Rebels put on a strong showing, winning seven matches against Memphis opponents on Sunday.
In singles, the Rebels won five of six matches against the Tigers. Ole Miss rallied through adversity, winning three of its matches despite losing the first set. Additionally, the Rebels won all four three-set matches.
No. 39 Sabina Machalova kept her good form going by defeating Memphis' Alisha Reayer. Despite dropping the first set to Reayer 6-1, Machalova cruised through the second and third sets winning 1-6, 6-1, 6-0. In similar fashion, after losing the first 6-4, Reka Zadori defeated her opponent, Dolavee Tumthong, 6-2, 6-1 in the second and third sets, respectively.
Both Tereza Janatova and Kelsey Mize claimed their first singles victories of the season, both in three sets. Janatova defeated the Tiger's Sophie Abrams in a third set tiebreak 7-3. After splitting the first two sets 6-4, 5-7, Mize broke away late from Memphis' Monique Woog to win the third 7-5.
Elysia Pool was the lone Rebel to win her match in straight-sets as she defeated Memphis' Camila Soares 6-2, 6-4.
In doubles, the Rebels won two of three matches. After falling to Georgia Tech opponents on Saturday, the teams of Janatova/Machalova and Mize/Zadori won on Sunday. With the victories, Machalova improves her 2020-21 record to 7-3, and Mize improves hers to 6-2 in doubles.
Coming Up
Ole Miss travels to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, to take on Old Dominion to start ITA Kickoff Weekend on Friday. The Rebels are the third seed in the Chapel Hill region, with the regional winner advancing to the ITA DI National Women's Team Indoors (Feb. 5-7).
