Ole Miss Distance Medley Relay Ran No. 2 Time in Program History
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Ole Miss men's and women's track & field put together a superb first day of action at Arkansas' Razorback Invite, led by a blistering effort from the Rebel men's distance medley relay squad that was part of a historic race at the Randal Tyson Track Center on Friday night.
The Rebel foursome of Waleed Suliman (1200-meter, 2:53.64), Baylor Franklin (400-meter, 48.58), Everett Smulders (800-meter, 1:49.91) and Mario Garcia Romo (mile, 3:58.51) took third place in the DMR at 9:30.62 – the second-fastest time in Ole Miss history, falling just short of the record 9:30.48 set by Robert Domanic, Ryan Manahan, Craig Engels and Sean Tobin at the Penn State National five years ago today on Jan. 29, 2016. Garcia Romo's astonishing mile leg to close out the race for the Rebel men stands as an unofficial five-second PR over his previous official mile best of 4:03.30 (10th all-time).
The time tonight by Ole Miss is impressive in its own right, resting No. 3 in the NCAA and No. 1 atop the SEC leaderboards at the moment, but the Oregon men stole the show, demolishing their own collegiate record and breaking the world record in the process at 9:19.42. Ole Miss junior Cade Bethmann helped set the pace for the DMR field on Friday night, purposely jumping out after leading the 1200-meter leg as the lone member of the Rebel B-squad relay.
All-American senior Allen Gordon had a fantastic day, nearly pulling off a double in the jumps. Gordon started the day with a sizable win in the men's long jump at a season-best 7.72m (25-04.00), which ranks seventh nationally and fifth in the SEC. Gordon then took runner-up in the high jump at 2.19m (7-02.25) after a tough back-and-forth battle with USC's Earnie Sears, who set the NCAA lead with his winning height of 2.26m (7-05.00).
Gordon's height, meanwhile rests fifth in the NCAA and second in the SEC in 2021. His high jump mark today fell just one centimeter shy of his indoor career-best 2.20m (7-02.50), and his winning long jump distance 11 centimeters shy of his best of 7.83m (25-08.25). Gordon sits beside Olympian Savante' Stringfellow as the lone Rebels to have ever cleared 7-2 in the high jump and 25-5 in the long jump indoors.
Senior Anna Elkin, fresh off a school-record performance in the mile at Vanderbilt's Commodore Indoor on Jan. 16, ran a great race in a high-powered women's 5K on Friday night. Elkin took fifth at a five-second PR of 16:21.83, improving on her place in fourth all-time at Ole Miss in addition to No. 10 in the NCAA and No. 6 in the SEC this season. Five of the top-10 times nationally this year were run in this 5K race, including the top-two from Arkansas' Katie Izzo (15:36.22) and Lauren Gregory (15:36.51).
Ole Miss claimed another event win to help in the men's team standings from senior Peyton Weissmann in the pole vault. He won at 5.00m (16-04.75), the 10th-best height in the SEC this year.
The Rebel men also received a solid early season performance from senior Elijah Dryer in the 200-meter dash. Dryer finished sixth in a stacked field at 21.30 seconds, just one tenth off his career-best 21.20 from last season. He currently ranks No. 30 in the NCAA and No. 11 in the SEC.
Ole Miss sits in second place of the men's team standings through six events scored, trailing Oregon, 48-41, and leading No. 1 Arkansas (40), No. 22 Georgia (26) and No. 10 USC (10). The Rebel women, meanwhile, are tied for seventh with Iowa State through the same number of scored events.
Action picks back up at 10:15 a.m. CT on Saturday with the resumption of the men's heptathlon.
