Rebels Rally to Beat Auburn to Begin SEC Match Play Championship

Second Round Matchup Suspended Due to Darkness
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Ole Miss men's golf team battled back to defeat Auburn 3-2 in the opening round of the SEC Match Play Championship Sunday (Oct. 10). As the No. 6 seed in the West Bracket, the Rebels took down the No. 3 seed Tigers at Shoal Creek Club.
Kye Meeks, Sarut Vongchaisit and Brett Schell won their individual matches to lock up the team match for Ole Miss. Vongchaisit and Schell had to overcome deficits on the back nine to claim victory.
"We got off to a slow start – that'd be a nice way to put it," said head coach Chris Malloy. "What I liked about the guys was they never gave up, and we were able to flip a couple of those matches in the end."
Meeks got the first point on the board against the Tigers, taking down Auburn veteran Alex Vogelsong 3 & 2. The Walnut, Mississippi, native stayed consistent by winning three holes on the front with pars to grab a 1-up lead heading to the back nine. Vogelsong tied the match with a birdie on No. 10, but it didn't last long as Meeks birdied the par-5 11th to regain the advantage. Playing 2-under through the first seven holes on the back side, without making a bogey along the way, Meeks picked up two more holes to secure the match.
Trailing 2-1, Ole Miss needed both Vongchaisit and Schell to rally. Vongchaisit was the first Rebel to battle back. The senior found himself 2-down with four to play, but quickly flipped the match on its head by winning three straight holes. Grabbing the lead heading to the 18th, Vongchaisit didn't let it go and held on to the 1-up come-from-behind victory.
With the Rebels and Tigers tied up at 2-2, it all came down to Schell versus Auburn's JM Butler. The sophomore got off to a rough start, losing four of the first six holes. However, the Rebel caught fire, beginning by winning the ninth hole. Taking the momentum to the back nine, Schell produced back-to-back birdies on holes 10 and 11 before claiming the 12th with a par. Winning four holes in-a-row squared the match for the first time all day. Schell took his first lead by taking No. 15, but Butler chipped in for birdie at the par-5 17th to tie the match with one hole to play. Undeterred, Schell stuck his approach to 10 feet on No. 18 and rolled in the birdie putt, completing his own comeback along with the Rebels' rally.
Ole Miss began its second round match against Arkansas, who beat Mississippi State in the opening round. However, the Rebels and Razorbacks were only able to get through eight holes before play was suspended due to darkness. Ole Miss leads two of the matches, Arkansas is ahead in a pair as well with the fifth match tied at the moment. The matches are set to resume Monday morning (Oct. 11) at 9 a.m. CT.
