Rebels have Won Eight Regional Titles
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss women's tennis travels to Tuscaloosa, Alabama for the ITA Southern Championships hosted at the University of Alabama Tennis Stadium. The event begins Thursday, Oct. 14, and concludes on Tuesday, Oct. 19.
The ITA Southern Championships will feature a 64-participant draw in singles and 32-team draw in doubles. Both draws are single elimination. Winning the event ensures automatic placement in the ITA Fall National Championships (Nov. 4-7 in San Diego).
The Rebels placed third overall in the ITA Southern Region in the 2020-21 season behind LSU and Auburn. Ole Miss' Sabina Machalova led the Rebels ranked No. 3 in the region in singles and No. 6 in doubles. Machalova was awarded the No. 27 ITA Preseason Ranking in singles and No. 48 in doubles. Tiphanie Fiquet (not competing in the event) was ranked No. 7 in the region in singles last season.
Machalova recently reached the round of 16 of singles qualifying at the ITA All-American Championships. Machalova is the only current Rebel (men's or women's) to have won an ITA Regional Title. Machalova and Natalie Suk won the 2017 ITA Southern Doubles Championship at the Yaborough Tennis Center in Auburn, Alabama.
Ole Miss student-athletes have won eight ITA Regional Championship Titles, five in singles and three in doubles. Notably, Rebels won both titles in 1997 with Agnes Muzamel winning in singles and Muzamel and Courtenay Chapman claiming the doubles title as well. Muzamel is the only Ole Miss tennis player to have won both the singles and doubles championship at the same event.
