No. 14 Rebel Women Beat Out Six Other Ranked Squads
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Ole Miss women's cross country continued to shine following an excellent team performance, and the Rebel men put in another solid showing at the Pre-National Invitational, held at Florida State on Friday morning.
The No. 14 Rebel women finished fourth at 165 points among a trove of the nation's top teams, finishing behind only No. 5 Colorado (54), No. 10 Utah (149) and No. 15 Florida State (163), while also beating out No. 12 North Carolina (184), No. 11 Arkansas (243), No. 16 Northern Arizona (279), No. 24 Georgetown (317), No. 28 Toledo (335) and No. 27 Kentucky (342). The No. 28 Ole Miss men held firm with the formchart with an 11th-place team finish at 348 points, which included victories over No. 17 Wake Forest (401), No. 25 Weber State (454) and No. 30 Charlotte (496).
Ole Miss was narrowly edged by South Region rival Florida State for third place in the women's Garnet 6K by a 163-165 margin, but that didn't outshine another superb morning for the Rebels. Team running was key, as the Rebels formed a tight pack for the third straight meet at an impressive scoring spread of just 32.8 seconds in their first 6K race of the season.
Senior Anna Elkin led the charge, running a 6K career-best 20:13.9 to finish 17th overall. Elkin is the fourth different Rebel to lead for the women in as many tries this season, and her first since notching the best NCAA finish ever by a Rebel woman with a 49th-place national finish in 2020. Sintayehu Vissa put together another powerful race, finishing close behind Elkin in 19th place at a 49-second 6K best of 20:15.4.
The other three Rebel scorers notched PRs as well, with Ryann Helmers finishing 29th at a 24-second best of 20:23.3, Lydia van Dijk took 40th at a PR of 20:33.6 and Loral Winn was 60th at a best of 20:46.6. Other Ole Miss women competing in the Garnet race included Skylar Boogerd (76th, 20:56.0), Kristel van den Berg (126th, 21:31.5, PR) and Cate Tracht (144th, 21:45.0, PR).
Ole Miss was paced by two strong individual performances in the men's Garnet 8K race to start the morning from seniors Michael Coccia and Mario Garcia Romo. Coccia led the way, finishing 18th at 23:23.6 – less than one second off his career-best – and reigning SEC Champion Garcia Romo was 26th at 23:27.7.
Other Rebel men running in the seeded Garnet race were Cade Bethmann (83rd, 24:07.9), Nick Moulai (95th, 24:14.5, PR), Ben Savino (127th, 24:23.9), James Young (163rd, 24:42.4, PR) and Dereck Elkins (168th, 24:43.5, PR).
Ole Miss was also represented in the two open races in Tallahassee this morning. The Rebel men finished 15th in the open 8K, which was run by Jack Filan (60th, 25:32.5), Baylor Franklin (72nd, 25:45.3), Aiden Britt (90th, 25:55.9), Miles Phillips (142nd, 26:37.1) and Jeriel Algarin-Marquez (160th, 26:53.6).
Two Rebel women ran in the open 6K race, with Brooke Gilmore running a career-best 21:54.5 to finish 34th overall, and Morgan Claire Rose taking 79th at 22:36.4.
With the regular season now in the rearview, Ole Miss now looks ahead to championship season on the horizon. Up first are the SEC Cross Country Championships, held at Missouri on Friday, October 29.
