Previous High for Rebel Women was No. 12 in Week Four of 2017
NEW ORLEANS – Ole Miss women's cross country has set yet another new standard, moving up to a program record No. 11 in the Week Five USTFCCCA National Coaches Poll released on Tuesday. This is the highest national ranking for the Rebel women since a No. 12 slot in Week Four of the 2017 season.
The Rebel women are in the midst of an excellent 2021 season, as this week's No. 11 ranking also now marks their longest stay within the top-15 at six consecutive appearances. Ole Miss turned heads with a superb season-opening victory at the North Alabama Showcase on Sept. 17, where the Rebels were nearly perfect with five scorers in the top seven spots and a large 20-90 win over Lipscomb. Ole Miss followed that up with hard-fought races at the high-powered Joe Piane Invitational at Notre Dame on Oct. 1 (sixth) and the Pre-National Invitational at Florida State on Oct. 15 (fourth). In both of those races, the Rebels beat out a combined total of 12 ranked schools and only finished behind eight total schools with an average national rank of 6.9.
The Rebel men held in the Week Five rankings at No. 28 following an 11th-place team finish at Pre-Nationals. This is the 33rd time both Ole Miss squads have been ranked simultaneously, as well as the ninth time in a row dating back to the end of the 2020 season.
This is the ninth straight appearance in the national poll for the Ole Miss women, who have now appeared in the USTFCCCA rankings 34 times in their history. Ole Miss has at least been receiving votes in 26 of the last 27 women's polls dating back to 2018 and 43 of the last 46 back to 2016.
Meanwhile, this is the 51st total appearance for the Rebel men and their 45th in a row dating back to the 2016 preseason. Additionally, Ole Miss has ranked in 51 of the last 54 men's polls going back to 2014 and have at least received votes in 54 of the last 56 also back to 2014.
With the regular season now in the rearview, Ole Miss now looks ahead to championship season on the horizon. Up first are the SEC Cross Country Championships, held at Missouri on Friday, October 29.
