Rebels Close Out Day One in Bahamas Tied for Second
10/29/2021 | Men's Golf
Suber and Meeks End Round in Top 5
NASSAU, Bahamas – The Ole Miss men's golf team concluded day one at the White Sands Bahamas Invitational tied for second overall on the team leaderboard following a day in which the Rebels logged a 283 (-5).
Alongside No. 21 South Florida and Florida Atlantic, the Rebels sit just three shots back of tournament host Little Rock (-8). Ole Miss ended the day leading the field in par-3 scoring (E), and finished as the only team that wasn't over par on those holes.
A pair of Rebels found themselves in the top 5 individually following the first round of competition in Nassau. Senior Jackson Suber (-4) and redshirt-freshman Kye Meeks (-2) ended their days tied for second and fourth, respectively.
"We were not very sharp midway through our round today and gave up quite a few strokes around the greens," head coach Chris Malloy said. "We really let the strong winds get to us at times. However, we fought back and finished strong to save our round. I fully expect this group to go out and have a great day tomorrow and put ourselves in a position to win this tournament."
Leading the charge for Ole Miss was Suber, whose phenomenal round of 68 (-4) put him tied for second overall and just one shot off the individual lead. Suber tallied a total of six birdies in his opening round of play, ending his day tied for the most total birdies in the field. Much of Suber's success on the day was credited to his par-5 scoring, where he finished 3-under on the day. The Tampa, Florida, native finished strong with five birdies over his final seven holes.
Meeks also put together a great opening round for the Rebels, firing a 70 (-2) to sit in fourth. A slow start saw Meeks in a hole early, as he carried a 3-over scorecard through 11 holes. However, a birdie on No. 12, along with Holes 15-17 resulting in a birdie, eagle and birdie, Meeks leapt up the leaderboard to his current lofty spot. Meeks was one of just five golfers to sink an eagle on the opening day of competition.
The third Rebel to finish under par in round one of the White Sands was sophomore Brett Schell. The St. Augustine, Florida, native carded a 71 (-1) that has him tied for 11th. Schell's performance, which included a front nine where he finished 2-under, featured a total of four birdies, including back-to-back birdies on Holes 6 and 7.
Evan Brown got off a hot start for the Rebels, as the graduate transfer moved to 2-under through his first 11 holes. However, a double bogey on No. 13 and no birdies the rest of the way saw Brown end his day shooting a 74 (+2), tied for 36th.
Ending day one at the top of the team leaderboard was Little Rock with their team score of 280 (-8) on the day. The Trojans currently hold just a three-stroke lead over the Rebels with 36 holes left to play.
Ole Miss will tee off for their second round of play at the White Sands Bahamas Invitational at 7:00 a.m. CT Saturday morning.
