Rebels Wrap Up Day One in Puerto Rico Tied for Eighth

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – The Ole Miss men's golf team opened their spring season at the Puerto Rico Classic on Sunday, carding a combined score of 278 (-10) to close out day one in a tie for eighth place on the team leaderboard.

Day one at the Grand Reserve Golf Club concluded with the Rebels logging a tournament-leading 65 total pars, as well as leading the field in par-3 scoring (-4). The Rebels would also log a total of 17 birdies, helping to contribute to their 10-under finish on the day.

The Rebels ended the day in Rio Grande with four golfers shooting below par, as senior Jackson Suber led the way individually for Ole Miss by firing a 67 (-5) to head into the tournament's second round tied for seventh.

"We got off to a slow start but were able to get some momentum going midway through our round," said Ole Miss head coach Chris Malloy. "We were close to putting together a good round, but weren't sharp enough on the par 5s to keep pace. We have two more rounds to go and I know that these guys will continue to fight to get back into contention."

Suber, who logged five birdies to open his tournament to now sits in a tie for seventh overall heading into day two. Suber's blazing opening round saw him leading the team in both par-3 scoring (-1) and par-4 scoring (-2). This now marks the six out of seven rounds played by Suber over the 2021-22 season in which he has finished below par, with his lowest round of 65 coming at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational.

Brett Schell continued his consistent play from the fall season for the Rebels by logging a round of 70 (-2), finishing day one in a tie for 35th. Schell, who ended the day par or better on all 18 holes of his round, has now matched his season-best round of 70 for the third time with his other two rounds of 70 coming at the Blessings Collegiate and the White Sands Bahamas.

Also putting together a round of 70 for the Rebels was senior Sarut Vongchaisit, tallying four birdies and a one-under back nine to finish tied with his teammate Schell in 35th. Vongchaisit's opening round saw the Bangkok, Thailand, native finish round one leading the team in par-5 scoring, finishing three-under in the category.

Now logging a below par round for his third straight round playing for the Rebels, as Jack Gnam would end the day in a tie for 48th after carding a 71 (-1) to open his tournament in Rio Grande. Gnam entered the weekend having logged rounds of 71 and 67 to cap off his White Sands Bahamas Invitational, as he now carries that momentum into the Puerto Rico Classic.

Rounding out play for the Rebels was redshirt-freshman Kye Meeks, who ended his opening round tied for 72nd with a round of 74 (+2). Fellow redshirt-freshman Ludvig Eriksson, who is competing as an individual, ended day one with a scorecard of 72 (E).

Leading the way after day one on the team leaderboard is Georgia, as the Bulldogs shot a blistering 23-under par as a team to hold first place heading into Monday.

Ole Miss is set to continue play at the Puerto Rico Classic starting at 6:30 a.m. CT on Monday, with the Rebels teeing off of Holes 8-10.
