Schell and Suber Find Their Way into Top 20 Heading into Final Round of Play

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – The Ole Miss men's golf team wrapped up round two of the Puerto Rico Classic on Monday with a team score of 276 (-12) to remain in eighth place heading into Tuesday's final round of play.

Logging a total of 26 birdies as a team on the day, the Rebels concluded round two leading the field in par-3 scoring (-8). Now scoring at 22-under as a team on the week, Ole Miss will look to make a late jump up the leaderboard in the tournament finale on Tuesday.

"We need to do a better job of finishing our rounds," said head coach Chris Malloy. "Today we had opportunity to post one of the best rounds of the day, but had too many unforced errors coming down the stretch. If we are going to be an elite team, we need to do a better job of this. We have a great opportunity in front of us tomorrow to finish this tournament off on a high note."

Continuing his strong performance in Rio Grande was sophomore Brett Schell, who set a new career-low round of 66 (-6) to climb the individual leaderboard to sit tied for 11th. Schell currently leads the Rebels in both par-4 (-3) and par-5 (-5) scoring, sinking seven birdies in his round two performance.

Also slotting into the top 20 heading into the final day in Puerto Rico was senior Jackson Suber, who wrapped up his day in a tie for 16th after shooting a round of 70 (-2). Now eight-under on the week, Suber is looking to continue his streak of earning top 20 individual finishes in each of his appearances for the team in the 2021-22 season.

Senior Sarut Vongchaisit also ended his second day in the 60s, shooting a 69 (-3) on the day with a total of six birdies. Vongchaisit, who is currently tied for 24th, is now tied for a team-high 10 birdies on the week with Suber.

Leading the team in par-3 scoring at three-under on the week, senior Jack Gnam closed out his second round with a 71 (-1) to sit tied for 50th entering day three. Gnam has now shot below par for his fourth consecutive round, spanning back to round two of the White Sands Bahamas Invitational.

Capping off the Rebels' day on the scorecard was redshirt-freshman Kye Meeks, who ended the day tied for 70th after carding a 73 (+1) on the day.

The Georgia Bulldogs lead the way on the team leaderboard heading into day three, with the Bulldogs shooting 43-under on the week.

Ole Miss returns to action tomorrow morning at 5:30 a.m. CT at the Grand Reserve Golf Club for the final round of play at the Puerto Rico Classic.
