Brett Schell with a Career-Best Fourth Place Performance
RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – In the third and final day of the Puerto Rico Classic from the Reserve Golf Club, Ole Miss wrapped up its first tournament of the spring shooting a combined score of 274 (-14) to finish in sixth place on the team leaderboard.
Ole Miss vaulted itself up from eighth to sixth on the leaderboard in its best day of the tournament, as the Rebels led all teams going (-8) in par-scoring. Finishing the tournament with a final tournament score of 828 (-36), the Rebels tied a program record for lowest tournament score set at the 1982 Mississippi Intercollegiate.
"It was great to get back into tournament play this week and knock off some competitive rust from the off season," said head coach Chris Malloy. "We have a lot of positives to build on, but we have a long way to go to be where we want to be going into post season. We will get back and regroup to head to one of the best fields of the year in Cabo."
Sophomore Brett Schell continued his strong play from Monday, firing a career-low 18-hole round 65 (-7) to ride to a career-best finish tied for fourth on the individual leaderboard. Schell recorded a total of eight birdies, to pace the Rebels on the day. Through the three days in Puerto Rico, Schell shot a career-low 54-hole score of 208 (-8).
"Brett's great week is no surprise to us," Malloy said. "He has been getting better and better and got the putter rolling this week. I think this will give him some confidence that he can be as good as anyone in college golf."
Three Rebels joined Schell shooting under par, with Jackson Suber logging a 71 (-1) round to finish tied 22nd overall as well as Sarut Vongchaisit. Vongchaisit recorded a season-low round today with a 69 (-3) and a career-low 54-hole score of 208 (-8) in Rio Grande.
Kye Meeks also had himself a career-best performance, firing off a career-low round with a score of 69 (-3). Meeks concluded the tournament with a career-low 54-hole score of 216 (E) to finished tied for 60th.
Rounding out play for the Rebels was senior Jack Gnam, who capped off his tournament with a 77 (+5) performance to finish 70th overall.
The Oklahoma Sooners would end the day as team tournament champions, logging a three-day score of 805 (-59) to claim the title.
Ole Miss will now have a short break before returning to action Feb. 27 for the Cabo Collegiate in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The tournament is set to run to March 1 at the Cabo Del Sol Ocean Course.
