Tamburlini, Johnson and Lignell See Best Rounds of Tournament
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Ole Miss women's golf team was able to battle their way back up the team leaderboard on Wednesday at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational, finishing fifth with a three-day score of 901 (+38).
The Rebels finished the tournament with the most total pars at 161 over the three-day stretch, while also tallying 33 total birdies as a team.
"We saw a good fight from the team today and moved a few spots up the leaderboard," said Ole Miss head coach Kory Henkes. "It was a nice start to the season for Chiara finishing with a top-15 finish in this elite field."
Finishing the highest on the leaderboard for the Rebels was junior Chiara Tamburlini, who ended her tournament in a tie for 14th at +6 on the week. Her score of 73 (+1) on Wednesday marked her best round of the tournament, and Tamburlini led the Rebels in birdies at the Blessings with a total of eight on the week.
Closely behind Tamburlini was senior Julia Johnson, as her three-day score of 223 (+7) had her finish tied for 17th. Johnson's round of 72 (E) on Wednesday was the lowest for Ole Miss, as she sank a trio of birdies as well as an eagle from distance on Hole 14. This marks the second eagle for Johnson this season, and she was one of just five women's golfers to make an eagle at the Blessings this week.
McKinley Cunningham put together her highest career finish at the Blessings Collegiate, finishing five-over on the day and in a tie for 30th (75-77-77–228). Cunningham's final four holes of the day proved to be her strongest, as she shot two-under in that stretch to close out her tournament with a round of 77 (+5).
Also shooting her best round of the tournament on day three was Andrea Lignell (73). Her finish at one-over par on the day put her up into 37th to conclude the tournament.
Smilla Sonderby rounded out the tournament for the Rebels, finishing with a 78 (+6) on the day and a three-day score of 236 (+20).
"We have a couple of weeks until we go to our next event so we know what needs to be worked on in order to compete at the level we know we are capable of," Henkes said.
Ole Miss will now have a brief bye week prior to traveling to Roland, Arkansas for the Jackson T. Stephens Cup on Oct. 18-20. The GOLF Channel will provide coverage of the Jackson T. Stephens Cup on all three days of the tournament.
