Rifle Concludes Fall With Win Over Memphis

Rebels Outshoot Tigers 4720-4654
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Wrapping up the fall slate on the road, No. 4 Ole Miss rifle took care of business, defeating Memphis 4720-4654 on Saturday.
For the fifth consecutive match, the Rebels toppled the 4700 mark, finishing with their second-best score of the season. Further, their team mark of 2382 in air rifle was the second-best outing in program history. Lea Horvath led the way with an 1186, followed by Claire O'Neel with an 1181.
The Rebels turned in a solid smallbore performance, with all five counters eclipsing 580 for a team score of 2338. Horvath paced the field with a 589 in the afternoon relay, while Zakrzeski fired a season-high 586 in the morning to finish second on the day. O'Neel, Kristen Derting and Abby Buesseler rounded out the scoring with marks of 582, 581 and 580, respectively.
In air rifle, O'Neel was on the verge of perfection, firing a career-high score of 599. The junior was flawless at the halfway mark before dropping one shot in her fourth series. She went on to finish the relay with the second-best mark in program history. Horvath followed with a strong 597, turning in three perfect strings of 10. Martina Gratz and Erin Walsh capped off the scoring with identical marks of 593.
Memphis fired a team score of 4654 (2299 in smallbore and 2355 in air rifle), but it wasn't enough to compete with the Rebels. Individually, Taylor Christian led the Tigers with the fourth-best score in the match, an 1173.
With the victory, Ole Miss concludes the fall portion of its 2020-21 season. The Rebels have posted a 6-1 record this year, only dropping the season opener to GARC powerhouse West Virginia. Winners of their last six, the Rebels will return to the range in 2022 with a tough test at No. 1 Alaska Fairbanks on Jan. 15 and 16.
