Rifle’s Comeback Effort Falls Short Against No. 1 Alaska Fairbanks

Rebels Top Nanooks in Air Rifle
FAIRBANKS, Alaska – No. 4 Ole Miss rifle was unable to make up a 17-point deficit after smallbore, falling just short against No. 1 Alaska Fairbanks, 4719-4725, Saturday afternoon.
Lea Horvath had a strong outing, firing the top aggregate score and tying the program record with an 1190; however, the other top three individuals in the match were Nanooks. Freshman M'Leah Lambdin also had an impressive day, posting career-highs in both disciplines (579 in smallbore and 594 in air rifle) to give her an 1173 aggregate score.
Ole Miss fired a team score of 2338 in smallbore, fueled by Horvath's 591 and Jillian Zakrzeski's 585. Abby Buesseler and Claire O'Neel each posted identical scores of 581, while Kristen Derting rounded out the counters with a 580. Despite all five counters eclipsing 580, Alaska Fairbanks held a 2355-2338 advantage heading into air rifle.
With ground to makeup, Horvath and O'Neel were lights out in air rifle. Horvath fired a 599, only missing with a 9.9 on her 39th shot, while O'Neel was perfect on her first 40 shots before two late 9.9s gave her a final mark of 598. Derting and sophomore Martina Gratz turned in a pair of 592s to give the Rebels a team score of 2381, but they were unable to make up the deficit.
The Nanooks started hot in smallbore and held on to the victory in air rifle to remain undefeated on the season. Alaska Fairbanks fired a team score of 4725, paced by Rylan Kissell (1186), Sára Karasová (1185) and Gavin Barnick (1180).
