Rebels Close Out Competitive Weekend in Alaska

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – No. 4 Ole Miss rifle gave the nation's No. 1 team Alaska Fairbanks and run for its money, falling by two shots, 4719-4721, Sunday afternoon.

Sophomore Lea Horvath tied for the top score on the day, firing an 1183. The Rebels made up three of the top five individuals in the match but were unable to overcome a strong Alaska Fairbanks smallbore performance.

Jillian Zakrzeski turned in the top score in smallbore for the Rebels, firing a 588. She was followed by Horvath (587) and O'Neel (586). Kristen Derting and Abby Buesseler shot on the second relay, both finishing with identical marks of 583. Not factoring into the scoring was freshman M'Leah Lambdin, who fired a career-high in smallbore for the second straight day.

Down six points after smallbore, Ole Miss looked to outshoot the Nanooks in air rifle again. Horvath and O'Neel led the way with scores of 596 and 595, respectively, followed by Martina Gratz with a 593. Derting and Zakrzeski rounded out scoring with a pair of 591 to bring the Rebels' total to 2375, topping Alaska Fairbanks, but not quite enough to take the match.

The Nanooks eked out the victory with a 4721 (2350 in smallbore and 2371 in air rifle). Gavin Barnick tied for the top aggregate score in the match, shooting an 1183.

Ole Miss is back in action on Jan. 29 and 30 when it travels to West Point for a pair of matches with Army and John Jay College.
