Freshman Sasha Ratliff Totaled a Team-High Five Blocks

STARKVILLE, Miss.— In the first match of the in-state rivalry series between Ole Miss and Mississippi State, the Rebels were unable to shake off a slow start, falling in three straight sets Thursday afternoon.

Four Rebels finished with five-plus kills as freshman right side Samantha Schnitta led the team with seven, while freshman Sasha Ratliff continued to show strength at the net with five total blocks. Ole Miss (0-11) was unable to keep up with Mississippi State (3-8) as the Bulldogs out-hit the Rebels .245 to .057.

An early Schnitta kill started off the match for Ole Miss as they jumped out to a 5-2 advantage. State quickly went on a 4-0 run to steal the lead at 6-5. The set started to go back and forth, with the two teams trading points before MSU led 15-14 headed into the first media timeout. The Bulldogs began to pull away with a 6-0 run before going ahead at 22-15. Ole Miss capitalized off of three straight Mississippi State errors to trail by four with MSU at set point before a service error allowed the home team to claim the set.

Mississippi State came out hot in the second set with three straight points before Ole Miss entered back into the conversation off of MSU errors to tie up the set at four. The Rebels struggled on offense as they only recorded two kills before the first media timeout and trailed 15-9. A 6-1 run continued for the Bulldogs to create separation at 18-10. Two straight kills from the Rebels provided some motivation, but it wasn't enough as the Bulldogs took the set 25-15.

Schnitta added her seventh kill of the day early on in the third set before the Rebs took off on a 4-0 scoring run to take a 5-1 lead. MSU responded with a run of its own to retake the set 6-5. Two straight kills from outside hitter Anna Bair put the Rebels up by two, 9-7. MSU continued with yet another four-plus point scoring run to lead 15-13, before a Sasha Ratliff solo block ended it. The Bulldogs went off on a 10-3 run to seal the set and the match, 25-17 and 3-0.

Ole Miss returns to the court tomorrow for round two against Mississippi State at noon CT. The match will air nationally on the SEC Network.
