Aubrey Sultemeier Hit for a Career-High .636 Clip
STARKVILLE, Miss.— In the second matchup in the rivalry series between Ole Miss and Mississippi State, the Rebels started off strong with a first set victory but could not close out the remaining sets, falling 3-1 on Friday.
Aubrey Sultemeier hit for a career-high .636 percentage with seven kills off of 11 attacks, while three Rebels finished with 10-plus kills as Anna Bair and Samantha Schnitta led the team with 12 each.
Three straight kills from the Rebels allowed them to get out to a 4-0 lead to begin the first set before MSU went off on a 4-0 run of its own to tie things up early. Another 4-0 run ensued for the Bulldogs before the Rebels called timeout trailing 11-7. The Rebels were able to tie the set up at 16 due to MSU errors and two straight Schnitta aces. The two squads continued to go back and forth in a highly contested frame before a 7-3 Ole Miss run, fueled by three straight Anna Bair kills, allowed the Rebels to take the set 25-22.
After trailing by two to start the second set, Ole Miss took off on a 6-0 run of their own, with three GG Carvacho kills, to lead by three at 9-6. A block from the duo of Sultemeier and Bair allowed the Rebels to take a 14-9 lead, their largest of the set. MSU soon worked their way back with a 6-2 run to tie it up at 20 all. The Bulldogs went on a 6-3 run, capitalizing on Rebel errors to claim the second set 25-23 and tie the match up at 1-1.
The Rebels struggled early in the third set, giving up four straight points to the Bulldogs, trailing 6-3 before a called timeout. Sasha Ratliff provided a spark for the Rebel offense, with her seventh kill of the match to pull within two, 14-12. The Rebels were able to keep pace with the Bulldogs, trailing by two for the majority of the set before a tip kill from Gabby Easton brought it within one, 22-21. Back-to-back kills from the Rebels tied up the set at 23 all, and a Sultemeier kill prevented the Bulldogs from taking the set point, yet a ball handling error ultimately gave MSU the set 26-24.
Back-to-back kills by Schnitta propelled the Rebels on an early 3-0 run in the fourth set, before points were traded back and forth to tie up the set early at five all. The Rebels recorded four straight points to lead 9-5 before an MSU timeout. Mississippi State battled back to pull within one as Ole Miss led 13-12. Attacking errors hurt the Rebels as the Bulldogs were able to keep it tight and tie up the set at 17 all. Schnitta's 12th kill of the day put the Rebels up by two at 22-20. A 3-1 MSU run tied things up at 23 all before the Bulldogs were able to seal the set and the match off another three 3-1 run to win 26-24 and take the match 3-1.
The Rebels return home to Oxford for their final home series of the season against Tennessee Thursday and Friday Feb. 18-19. Both matches will air on SEC Network + at 2 p.m. CT.
