Four Rebels Finish with Five Plus Kills
BATON ROUGE, La.— In the first of an eight-match road stretch, Ole Miss went up against LSU and two of the strongest outside hitters in the SEC but were unable to claim any sets in the contentious match, falling 3-0 Saturday from the Maravich Center.
LSU (5-8, 5-8 SEC) kicked off the match with two straight points, before GG Carvacho put Ole Miss (0-13, 0-13 SEC) on the board with her first kill of the day off an assist from Gabby Easton. LSU took off on a 4-0 run to lead 6-1 before an Ole Miss timeout. LSU continued to capitalize off of Rebel errors to lead by as many as six in the set, yet the Rebels worked to build momentum with a 3-0 run to cut the deficit to four, trailing 10-6. A 5-1 run from the Rebels, highlighted by an Aubrey Sultemeier ace, cut the Tiger lead to one at 13-12. However, Ole Miss struggled to catch up to LSU pulling within two at 23-21 before the Tigers took the set 25-22.
In a set that started off back and forth tied at three all, Sultemeier's second kill gave the Rebels a spark to take off on a 7-1 scoring run to lead 12-5. LSU battled back into the set on a 10-3 run of its own to ultimately tie up the set at 15 all. Sasha Ratliff's sixth kill of the day gave Ole Miss a two-point lead at 18-16, before a 3-0 Rebel run extended their lead. The Tigers stormed back as outside hitters Paige Flickinger and Taylor Bannister both reached double-digit kills to tie the set up for the ninth time at 25 all before taking it at 27-25.
After trailing by two early in the third set, Samantha Schnitta added her seventh kill of the match to get the Rebels started, along with Payton Brgoch entering and adding a kill off of Easton's 24th assist. LSU quickly recorded two straight kills to grab control of the set and lead by as many as five, before a run by Ole Miss brought the set within 3 at 13-10. The Tigers took off on multiple 4-0 scoring runs to close out the set and the match winning 25-13 and 3-0.
