Ole Miss Faces off with Tigers at Home

OXFORD, Miss. – After its first setback of the 2020-21 season, No. 3 Ole Miss rifle looks to bounce back as they host No. 9 Memphis on Saturday at the Patricia C. Lamar National Readiness Center.

The Rebels boast a 9-1 record (6-1 GARC) on the season. Heading into the weekend, Ole Miss is aiming for double-digit wins for the first time in program history.

The two teams faced off in the fall with the Rebels coming out on top, 4711-4658, thanks to an impressive smallbore performance. Ole Miss has made great strides from a year ago in both disciplines, boosting its aggregate average from 4668.7 to a mark of 4705.7, which currently ranks fourth in the NCAA.

Lea Horvath currently ranks third in the nation with an aggregate average of 1187.0. The freshman has had a season to remember after eclipsing the 1190 mark two times in her last three matches. Horvath also became the second freshman ever to fire a perfect air rifle score and is one of just three athletes to achieve the feat this season.

Kristen Derting also finds herself in the top 10 with a season average of 1179.2. She has posted an impressive smallbore mark of 580 or better every match this season and holds the Ole Miss school record with a 594, which she fired back on Oct. 11. The sophomore is averaging an aggregate score of 1180.0 at home this season.

A pair of juniors in Jillian Zakrzeski and Erin Walsh sit on the cusp of the top 25 individuals. Zakrzeski is coming off a stellar January that began with a career-high performance at Ohio State. She averaged a mark of 1172.8 during that span. Walsh also had an impressive month, serving as a counter in the previous two matches.

The last time Abby Buesseler competed at home, she shot extremely well in smallbore, posting marks of 587 and 586 in back-to-back days of competition. She looks to continue that sharpshooting this weekend.

Claire O'Neel and Martina Gratz have been splitting time as counters recently, with O'Neel primarily counting in smallbore and Gratz in air rifle. The two add extra depth for the Rebels, who are starting to finalize their lineup for postseason competition.

On the opposing side, Memphis is paced by Taylor Gibson, who owns an aggregate average of 1177.0 on the season. As a team, the Tigers are averaging a team score of 4668.3 (2312.8 in smallbore and 2355.5 in air rifle).

Saturday's match is set to begin at 9 a.m. CT and will not be open to the public, but fans are encouraged to follow along on Twitter for live updates and results.
