Coach Trachsel Celebrates Birthday with First Rebel Win
TROY, Ala. – Having to wait just a little bit extra due to morning rain showers, Ole Miss softball took to the field for the first time in 341 days on Friday, splitting its doubleheader at the Trojan Classic.
The Rebels (1-1), opened the day by giving first-year head coach Jamie Trachsel an early birthday present with the first win of her Ole Miss tenure, defeating UAB (0-1) 8-2. The Rebs turned right around to face the host Troy Trojans (1-0), dropping the second half of the twin billing by a 5-2 score.
GAME ONE | Ole Miss 8, UAB 2
A five-run second inning was the difference maker as Ole Miss picked up its first win of the 2021 season, defeating UAB 8-2 in the season opener.
Savannah Diederich started in the circle for the Rebels, tossing 4.1 solid innings and picking up the victory. The right-hander surrendered two runs on four hits and struck out five. Ava Tillman tossed the final 2.2 scoreless innings, striking out six of the nine batters she faced.
The Rebels got the bats going in the second, batting around the order. Gabby Alvarez started the inning off with a walk, and the speedy Katelin Cooper came in to pinch run. Gillespie knocked in the first run of the season on an RBI single and eventually came around to score on a Mikayla Allee double. Paige Smith capped off the five-run second with a two-RBI single to left.
There was some action on the base paths for the Blazers in the bottom half of the inning, but Gillespie quickly quelled the danger with a pickoff, while Diederich recorded a pair of Ks.
Both teams had runners on in the third and fourth innings. The Blazers were able to capitalize off an error in the fourth and steal a run back on a Frazier home run.
Ole Miss quickly got the run back as Puk launched a solo shot to center field in the fifth, the first home run of the season for the Rebs. The big fly was the 13th of the seniors career.
UAB tacked on another run in the home half of the fifth, scoring on an RBI single, but Tillmann was able to come in and minimize the damage.
Ole Miss added two more runs in the seventh, thanks in part to an RBI double from Puk. She touched home on a Sydney Gutierrez groundout, pushing the lead to 8-2 before Tillmann came back out for the final frame and retired the side in order.
GAME TWO | Troy 5, Ole Miss 2
Ole Miss grabbed an early lead but couldn't hold it against the Trojans, dropping the game by a 5-2 margin.
Tillmann returned to the rubber in the second game of the double header. In four innings of work, she gave up three earned runs with one strikeout. Lefty Anna Borgen came on in relief for the final two innings for the Rebels, surrendering one run on three hits, striking out one.
Ole Miss jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the third after Whitley walked and eventually came around to score on a dropped fly ball in the outfield. The Trojans, however, immediately responded in the home half. After the first three batters of the inning reached, Tillmann worked to limit the damage, ultimately surrendering a pair of runs to put Ole Miss behind 2-1 heading to the fourth.
Troy went on to score single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, extending its lead. Abbey Latham knocked one out of the park in the top of the sixth to pull Ole MIss within striking distance, but it wasn't enough as the Rebels failed to rally a threat in the seventh.
Due to inclement weather in the forecast, Ole Miss Saturday schedule at the Trojan classic is to be determined. A schedule update will be posted to the schedule page at OleMissSports.com Friday night.
