Rebels Blast Four Home Runs in Game One of Doubleheader
TROY, Ala. – Ole Miss (2-2) went 1-1 on the second day of the Trojan Classic on Saturday, defeating Belmont (0-2) 10-2 in six innings before falling in the nightcap to UAB (1-2) by a 13-5 margin.
GAME ONE | Ole Miss 10, Belmont 2
The Rebels broke out the bats, smashing four home runs en route to a 10-2 run-rule victory over Belmont Saturday morning.
Diederich was electric on the rubber in her four innings of work, allowing just two hits and a walk while racking up nine strikeouts. Landyn Bruce made her college debut in relief, working the final two frames with two runs allowed and three strikeouts.
After a pair of scoreless innings, Paige Smith got Ole Miss on the board first with a two-run jack in the third following a Tate Whitley double to left center. The Rebels would add another run to extend their lead to 3-0, after Puk singled and scored on a Gillespie infield hit two batters later.
Ally Mena kicked off a four run fourth with her first home run of the season, a solo shot to center on the first pitch of the at bat. Shortly thereafter, Whitley made her way on base with a bunt single and Smith earned a free pass to put two on with two outs. Puk took advantage of the situation and launched a three-run shot, cracking the game wide open.
After a quick fifth inning, Puk found herself at the plate again with two runners on base. The Iowa native made the Bruins pay once again, sending a towering shot to center field for her second three-run bomb of the day.
With a 10-0 Rebel lead heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Bruins broke up the shutout with an inside-the-park home run when Macey Keester was unable to complete her attempt at a diving catch in right. Despite a pair of Belmont runs, Ole Miss wrapped up the win via the run rule with an eight-run lead.
GAME TWO | UAB 13, Ole Miss 5
Taking advantage of some Rebel missteps, the Blazers came out swinging on Saturday night and the Rebels were unable to match, falling 13-5 in five innings.
Tillmann and Lindsey Johnson both tossed two frames each in the loss. Diederich also made a brief appearance in relief, while Anna Borgen tossed one perfect frame out of the bullpen.
UAB wasted no time in the first, scoring two runs on a pair of hits. However, Tillmann was able to work herself out of a bases loaded jam and minimize the damage.
The Rebels answered in the bottom half of the inning, quickly erasing the deficit and grabbing a lead of their own. Abbey Latham smoked a double to left to tie the score at two runs apiece, scoring Smith and Puk. Gillespie followed up by poking an RBI single through the left side, giving Ole Miss a one run advantage.
With the green light on the base path in the second, the Rebels executed a perfect double steal in the second as Blaise Biringer took second and Katelin Cooper swiped home.
However, a six run third proved to be the Rebels downfall as they surrendered four hits and committed a pair of errors in the field. From that point on UAB took control of the momentum, adding five more runs in the top of the fourth.
Ole Miss scratched across a run in the fourth, stringing together three straight singles, capped by a Biringer knock to bring home Nyomi Jones. However, the rally fell well short as Ole Miss went down in order in the fifth.
Due to the inclement weather heading towards Oxford, Ole Miss will not play on the final day of the Trojan Classic. The Rebs wrap up their stay in Troy at 2-2 and will return to action next weekend in the FAU "Strike-Out Cancer" Tournament.
