Softball Opens Stay in Boca Raton with Doubleheader Split

2/19/2021 | Softball

BOCA RATON, Fla. – It was a tale of two games as Ole Miss softball split the doubleheader on day one of the FAU "Strike-Out Cancer" Tournament.

After only totaling three hits in the loss to Iowa State (6-0) to open the tournament, the Ole Miss (3-3) offense bounced back, exploding for 12 hits and 10 runs in the victory over FAU (1-4). Both games featured impressive pitching performances from the Rebel starters.

GAME ONE | Iowa State 2, Ole Miss 0
Ole Miss couldn't get the bats going against the Cyclones, falling 2-0 despite a solid pitching performance from Savannah Diederich. The junior tossed a complete game for the first time in her career, surrendering two runs and striking out eight in the loss.

Iowa State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first, capitalizing on an early Rebel error. Ole Miss had plenty of action on the basepaths as it tried to knot things up, but couldn't make the decisive play, leaving runners in scoring position in both the first and second innings.

Mikayla Allee turned an unassisted double play in the third, catching the popup and making the tag after the Cyclones put the leadoff runner on. Ole Miss had a scoring opportunity in the bottom half of the inning after an Iowa State error, but Blaise Biringer was thrown out at the plate trying to tie things up.

The Cyclones tacked on another run in the fifth and were threatening again in the sixth with the bases loaded, but Biringer made a diving play at second to keep it a two-run ballgame. Ole Miss was unable to mount a comeback in the late going, dropping its opening game in Boca Raton.

GAME TWO | Ole Miss 10, FAU 1
Highlighted by an Aynslie Furbush grand slam, the Rebels smacked a season-high 12 hits in a 10-1 rout over FAU.

Making her first start of the season, Anna Borgen was electric in the circle. She only allowed one run on two hits in 4.0 innings of work. Landyn Bruce came in for the final inning and retired all three batters she faced.

A Biringer leadoff triple set the tone early as the freshman continued to swing the bat well. She scored on an RBI single from Abbey Latham, who later came around to add a second run on a sac fly from Alvarez. The Rebels loaded the bases in the second and tacked on two more runs courtesy of another sac fly and a throwing error.

The Owls stole one back in the bottom half of the second, but Borgen was able to limit the damage, working her way out of a bases loaded jam.

Ole Miss once again found itself with the bases full in the fourth after a leadoff double from Autumn Gillespie and a pair of bunt singles from Allee and Whitley. Nyomi Jones came in to pinch run for Gillespie and managed to pick up another run on the third sacrifice of the day, the second for Puk.

The Rebels broke the game open in the fifth. Alvarez raked her second double of the day, and Paige Smith walked with one out. Jones sent an RBI single up the middle for the sixth run of the afternoon, making it a 6-1 game. Two batters later, freshman Furbush crushed her first collegiate hit, a grand slam over the scoreboard, to put the game away for good.

Ole Miss is back in action tomorrow for the second day of the FAU "Strike-Out Cancer" Tournament, taking on Missouri in a non-conference matchup at 11 a.m. CT and FAU again at 4 p.m. CT.

Quick Hits
Blaise Biringer went 2-4 in game one against Iowa State. The first multi-hit game of the freshman's career.
• Biringer finished the day 5-for-8 at the plate after going 3-for-4 in the win over FAU.
• Right hand pitcher Savannah Diederich pitched a career-high 7.0 innings in the loss to the Cyclones. She only surrendered two runs and was one strikeout shy of her career best.
Aynslie Furbush grand slam against the Owls was Ole Miss' seventh home run of the season and the first grand slam since Kacey Hvitved's against Jackson State in 2020.
• The 10-1 rout of FAU marked the Rebels first win over the Owls in school history (four previous meetings).
• Ole Miss has scored at least eight runs in all three of its victories in 2021, twice reaching double figures in run production.
