Rebel Bats Come Alive in Night Cap of Split Twin Bill

2/20/2021 | Softball

BOCA RATON, Fla. – An exciting run-rule victory stood out as Ole Miss (4-4) went 1-1 on day two of the FAU "Strike-Out Cancer" Tournament.

The Rebels lined up on the diamond against a familiar opponent in the morning affair, fall 6-2 to No. 21 Missouri (4-2) in a non-conference matchup. Ole Miss bounced back in the night cap against FAU (2-6) thanks to a career-high five RBIs from freshman Aynslie Furbush, who also tossed two innings of relief in the one-hit shutout victory.

GAME ONE | No. 21 Missouri 6, Ole Miss 2
Ole Miss took a crack at SEC foe Missouri in a non-conference matchup, but the Tigers were too much to handle as the Rebs fell 6-2.

Missouri jumped out to a quick lead after a solo shot in the bottom of the first and a two-run second. The Rebels got a little momentum going in the third, plating a run on an RBI double from Abbey Latham, but she was left stranded in scoring position.

The Tigers took the run back in the bottom half of the inning and scored another pair of runs in the fourth to put the game away. Ole Miss attempted a late rally in the seventh inning putting a pair of runners on base, adding one more run to the board.

GAME TWO | Ole Miss 11, FAU 0
For the second straight day, Furbush blasted a grand slam to help the Rebels run-rule FAU. Ole Miss scored in four of the five innings in the 11-0 rout.

Ava Tillmann was dealing on the rubber. She threw 3.0 one-hit innings before Furbush came in to cap off the final two frames of the shutout. The duo only allowed one Owl base runner all game.

It didn't take long for the Rebels to get going on offense. Biringer singled, while Jessica Puk and Gabby Alvarez walked in the top of the first to fill the bases. With two outs, Furbush went opposite field for her second grand slam in as many days to put the Rebs up 4-0.

Ole Miss struck again in the third, grabbing another run on a sac fly from Mikayla Allee. Tillman went on to retire the side in order in the bottom half of the inning as she faced only 10 batters in her three innings of work.

Three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings broke the game open. With two runners on, Paige Smith knocked in a run. A pass ball shortly after scored Alvarez and Smith wasn't too far behind, touching home on a sac fly from Furbush. The following inning, Kelsha Loftin picked up her first career hit and eventually zoomed around the bases to score on an error. Kacey Hvitved knocked in a run with an RBI double and Mac Barbara brought her home with an RBI single down the line to close out the day's scoring.

Ole Miss will wrap up its stay in Boca with an early morning matchup against Iowa State on Sunday. First pitch is set for 8:30 a.m. CT.

Quick Hits
Blaise Biringer notched her third consecutive multi-hit game, collecting two infield hits against Missouri. Biringer is now 8-for-15 during the tournament.
Anna Borgen and Lindsey Johnson combined for 2.1 scoreless innings of relief against the Tigers, with both allowing one hit in 0.2 and 1.2 innings, respectively.
Aynslie Furbush recorded her second grand slam of the tournament in the 11-0 win over FAU. It took the freshman just three at-bats to become the fifth Rebel ever to hit multiple grand slams in a career, joining teammate Abbey Latham.
• Furbush's five runs batted in was also a career high.
Kelsha Loftin recorded her first career hit at Ole Miss, eventually scoring for the 35th time in Red and Navy.
Jessica Puk made the FAU pitchers work, drawing a career-high three walks. She came around to score two runs in the Rebels victory.
• Ole Miss has scored at least eight runs in all four of its victories in 2021, including reaching double figures in three of those games.
