Rebels Post 2-3 Record at FAU “Strike-Out Cancer” Tournament

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Ole Miss softball ended its stay at the FAU "Strike-Out Cancer" Tournament in heartbreaking fashion, surrendering a seventh inning walk-off to Iowa State in a 7-6 defeat.

The Rebels (4-5) had all the momentum early on, but Iowa State (9-1) stormed back to win the ball game with a big four-run fourth inning and some late game heroics. Ole Miss wrapped up its stay in Boca Raton with a 2-3 record on the weekend.

Savannah Diederich got the nod against Iowa State for the second game this weekend. The junior gave up three runs on three hits in 3.1 innings, striking out half the batters she faced. Ava Tillmann and Aynslie Furbush came in relief, both throwing 1.2 innings.

The Rebels drew first blood against the Cyclones. Furbush got a free pass, and Autumn Gillespie singled to left to put two on with no outs. Paige Smith ripped an RBI single to give the Rebs a 1-0 advantage. Iowa State was able to work its way out of a jam after catching Gillespie trying to take an extra bag, putting away the next two batters.

Jessica Puk lifted her team-leading fourth home run of the season in the top of the third. She scored Biringer on the two-run shot to left-center, extending the lead.

Through the first three innings, Diederich faced 10 batters, striking out seven of them. Gillespie also caught her third victim of the season on the basepaths in the bottom of the second.

The bats got after it again the following inning. With runners on the corners, Sydney Gutierrez had a sac fly to score pinch-runner Maddi Banks. Then with two outs in the fourth, Abbey Latham knocked in a run with an RBI single. The Cyclones finally had an answer in the bottom half of the inning, hitting two home runs to make it a one-run ballgame.

After Iowa State tied things up in the fifth inning, the Rebels went back to work. Three consecutive singles from Nyomi Jones, Tate Whitley and Blaise Biringer helped Ole Miss break the tie.

Furbush came in for the final two innings of relief. After a smooth sixth inning, she ran into some trouble with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the seventh. The freshman got a big swinging strikeout, but Alesia Ranches came through for ISU with a two-run double in the gap to walk things off.

Quick Hits
• Ole Miss tied its season-high with 12 hits in the loss.
• For the fourth time this weekend, freshman Blaise Biringer tallied two or more hits. She was 10-for-18 in the tournament and now has a team-leading seven-game hitting streak.
• Additionally, Biringer collected 10 of her 12 career hits over the weekend in Boca.
Abbey Latham went 3-4 with an RBI in the loss. Her three hits were a season-high.
