Softball Opens Texas Tour with Doubleheader Sweep

2/26/2021 | Softball

WACO, Texas – Opening up the Lone Star Invitational, Ole Miss (6-5) reeled in a pair of wins on Friday, taking down UConn (3-3) and No. 23 Baylor (3-2) at Getterman Stadium.

The Rebels racked up 20 runs on 19 hits on the day, while the pitching duo of Landyn Bruce and Savannah Diederich held the opposing bats in check throughout both affairs.

GAME ONE | Ole Miss 7, UConn 0
Ole Miss got the day off on the right foot against UConn, shutting down the Huskies 7-0 behind a pair of strong middle innings on offense and an electric first career start from Bruce.

Making the third appearance of her rookie campaign, Bruce registered the first complete game shutout of the season for Ole Miss. The California native scattered seven hits in her seven innings, striking out five along the way.

After letting chances to break through early slip away in the first three frames, Ole Miss broke through in the fourth. Autumn Gillespie got the party started with a no-doubt bomb over the left field wall, her first home run of the season. Blaise Biringer ripped a double to straight-away center field to score Tate Whitley, scoring herself shortly after on a Jessica Puk single.

With a comfortable lead in tow, the Rebs broke things open in the fifth. After an HBP and a pair of walks loaded the bases, Sydney Gutierrez cleared them with a 2-run single to center, with an additional run coming home on the throw. In the next at-bat, Biringer smacked a single through the left side, bringing in another run.

The Tigers took the run back in the bottom half of the inning and scored another pair of runs in the fourth to put the game away. Ole Miss attempted a late rally in the seventh inning putting a pair of runners on base, adding one more run to the board.

Backed by plenty of run support, Bruce shut things down from there, closing out the final two frames to secure the first win of her career.

GAME TWO | Ole Miss 10, No. 23 Baylor 4
After surrendering an early lead, Ole Miss battled back and ultimately blew out Baylor on its home field, garnering the first ranked win of 2021 with a 10-6 victory at Getterman Stadium.

Diederich got the nod on the rubber and aside from a rough patch in the fourth, shut the Bears down. The junior allowed four runs on six hits, striking out four in seven complete.

The Rebels attacked early, scoring single runs in the second, third and fourth innings. Paige Smith got things started with her second home run of the season, a line drive dinger over the wall in left.

Puk added on in the third, spanking a single up the middle to bring Whitley home. The next inning, Mikayla Allee hit the gap for a double, plating pinch runner Katelin Cooper.

However, the Bears responded in the home half of the fourth, striking for four the garner the lead on a pair of two-run singles.

Down but not out, the Rebs went to work in the sixth. Back-to-back walks issued to Allee and Gutierrez set the wheels in motion and Aynslie Furbush came up clutch with a two-out, pinch hit double, bringing both runners home to regain the lead for Ole Miss.

After a quick inning on defense, the Rebels broke things open in the seventh to give themselves plenty of insurance. Gillespie and Smith started out the frame with back-to-back jacks before Nyomi Jones plated another run with a fielder's choice and Puk drove home two with a double. With the lead extended to six, Diederich finished thing off in order in the home half.

Ole Miss continues its Texas tour on Saturday, heading to San Marcos for a doubleheader against Sam Houston and host Texas State. Game times are set for 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. CT, respectively. No stream will be available for either game but live stats will be provided.
