Tillmann Narrowly Misses No-No, Rebels Blast Sam Houston
SAN MARCOS, Texas – For the fifth time on the season, Ole Miss (7-6) split a doubleheader on Saturday, clobbering Sam Houston (2-3) 12-0 in five innings before dropping a tight 2-1 contest to host Texas State (4-2).
GAME ONE | Ole Miss 12, Sam Houston 0
In the early game, Ole Miss scored early and often against Sam Houston State, setting aside the Bearkats 12-0 in a five-inning game.
Ava TIllmann came just one out away from recording the first no-hitter for Ole Miss since 2014, surrendering a single base knock in five complete innings.
Ole Miss piled up 14 hits in the game, the most since racking up 18 in the 13-inning win at UAB in 2020. The Rebels spread the love in the affair, with 11 different players registering a hit.
Blaise Biringer got the Rebs off and running right from the jump, attacking the second pitch of the ballgame and sending it over the fence in right-center, becoming the first Rebel to leadoff a game with a home run since Lauren Grill in 2008.
Tate Whitley tacked on two more runs in the second, smoking a two-run double over the center fielder's head. The next frame, Abbey Latham put a charge in a pitch, crushing a solo shot to left, putting the Rebs up 4-0.
After nibbling a few runs in the first few frames, Ole Miss batted around and broke things open in the fourth. Jessica Puk got the party started with a solo shot over the bullpen in left field before Mikayla Allee drew a bases-loaded HBP and Nyomi Jones legged out an infield double to plate two more. Biringer followed with a two-run single and two more runs came home on a dropped pop up in the infield. When all was said and done, the Rebels had eight runs home in the inning and a 12-0 lead.
With just three outs standing between her and a no-hitter in the fifth, Tillmann nearly got the job done. The righty forced a weak grounder to second but SHSU's Kayte Martinez was ruled safe on a bang-bang play at first, giving the Bearkats their first hit of the game. Two pitches later, Allee fielded a ball up the middle and flipped to Ally Mena to finish off the run-rule win.
GAME TWO | Texas State 2, Ole Miss 1
A two-run defecit after the first inning was too much for Ole Miss to overcome as the Rebels fell 2-1 in the second game of the twin billing to host Texas State.
Despite taking the loss, Savannah Diederich was effective in the circle. The right hander finished the game with six hits allowed in six innings, allowing two runs and striking out three.
Texas State cracked the scoreboard early, plating a pair of runs in the first inning on a bloop single to right. From there, Diederich held the Bobcats in check as Ole Miss attempted to fight back.
The Rebels used some aggressive base running and small ball to cut the deficit in half in the fifth. After Gabby Alvarez walked and Katelin Cooper came in to run, Whitley dropped down a bunt single and both her and Cooper took an extra bag to put two in scoring position. Biringer delivered a sac fly to bring in a run but Ole Miss was unable to do any further damage.
Ole Miss will close out the Lone Star Invitational on Sunday in Austin, Texas, taking on the No. 7 ranked Texas Longhorns at 12:30 p.m. CT. The game will be the first national TV broadcast of the year for Ole Miss, airing on the Longhorn Network.
