Senior Anna Elkin Broke the Ole Miss Record in the Women’s 3K

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Ole Miss men's and women's track & field capped a spectacular weekend of competition with another school record and several other highly-ranked performances at the conclusion of the Music City Challenge on Saturday.

After watching a superb first day that saw two new school records and a handful of high NCAA performances, senior Anna Elkin got right to work on making some history of her own in the women's 3K. Elkin clocked a powerful 19-second PR of 9:17.19 to win and take down the previous record of 9:17.39 set by Shelby Brown in 2017. This is the second school record Elkin has set this indoor season after briefly holding the Rebel women's mile record that has already changed hands four different times in 2021. Her 3K record currently puts her at No. 15 in the NCAA and No. 9 in the SEC this season.

Other Rebels notching personal bests in the 3K were Maddie King in sixth (9:27.17, No. 5 all-time), Kristel van den Berg in ninth (9:33.45, No. 7 all-time) and Cate Tracht in 14th (9:40.04, No. 13 all-time).

Freshman Samara McConnell continued on her torrid pace to her first campaign with the Rebels, narrowly finishing runner-up in the women's pole vault on Saturday. McConnell improved yet again to 4.20m (13-09.25), and only finished in second on total misses. It's been a wild first month of collegiate action for McConnell, whose progression started with 3.95m (12-11.50) at Vanderbilt on Jan. 16, and improved to 4.08m (13-04.50) last week at South Carolina. Her newest height vaults her all the way up to No. 3 all-time in Ole Miss history behind Lindsey Murray (4.29m/14-01.25) and Neal Tisher (4.24m/13-11.00). Furthermore, her performance today pushed her up to No. 13 in the NCAA, No. 5 in the SEC, and third nationally among all freshmen.

Ole Miss received a couple of other NCAA top-20 times from the men's 800-meter. All-American senior John Rivera Jr. took runner-up in his season debut at 1:49.09, currently 12th nationally and sixth in the SEC. Junior Cade Bethmann had a career day right behind him in third place, running a PR of 1:50.01 to push him to No. 13 all-time at Ole Miss and No. 19 in the NCAA this season.

The Rebels received four additional event victories on Saturday, including a sweep in the shot put. Junior Tedreauna Britt led Ole Miss in the women's edition, throwing beyond the 16-meter plateau for the second straight week with her winning toss of 16.03m (52-07.25). It was a Rebel sweep on the podium as well, with Jalani Davis (second, 15.41m/50-06.75) and Jasmine Mitchell (third, 14.98m/49-01.75) finishing right behind Britt.

In the men's shot put, sophomore Daniel Viveros won on a career-best throw of 17.88m (58-08.00), moving him ahead of Derek McGuire (17.71m/58-01.25) for third all-time at Ole Miss. Danny Guiliani took third in the shot put at 17.40m (57-01.00).

Ole Miss also notched two more wins on the track, with junior Kenney Broadnax winning the 60-meter hurdles at a season-best 7.95, and senior Elijah Dryer tying his PR at his winning 60-meter dash time of 6.79.

The Rebels will have next week off to prepare for the SEC Indoor Championships, which are scheduled for Feb. 25-27 at Arkansas.
