Suber Fires Rare Under-Par Round on Windy Day

Rebels Middle of the Pack After 18 Holes in Louisiana

BATON ROUGE, La. – On a blustery day that kept red figures to a minimum, Jackson Suber fired a 1-under 71 as the Ole Miss golf team opened up play at the LSU Invitational. Out of the 90-player field, Suber was just one of six to produce an under-par round.

The Rebels sit smack dab in the middle of the pack, eighth place, after the opening round. Ole Miss ended the day at 11-over (299), just six shots back of No. 6 Illinois. Taking advantage of the par 5s, the Rebels played the holes 5-under as team.

"The guys played an extremely solid round with the exception of two holes. That is the difference in being in eighth place rather than in the lead," said head coach Chris Malloy. "I really thought they hung tough in some windy conditions. I look forward to seeing them get some momentum going tomorrow morning and make a run at the lead."

Ole Miss began the tournament on the back nine. An opening bogey didn't affect Suber as he reeled off six straight pars before a birdie on No. 17. He gave it right back by bogeying the 18th to make the turn at 1-over. However, Suber immediately got back to even par with a birdie on the par 4 first. The Tampa, Florida, native picked up four birdies over his final nine holes, pushing him into red figures. Suber's five birdies were the second-most by any golfer, and his 71 left him in third after day one.

Brett Schell followed Suber with a 75 (+3). The freshman recorded Ole Miss' first birdie of the spring with a three on the par 4 12th. Schell had three more birdies during his round, each of them coming on par 5s. Taking away a triple bogey on No. 5, a par 3, Schell hovered around level par all day long.

Cecil Wegener (76) and Veeti Mahonen (77) were grinding out pars in the wind, tallying 12 apiece over the 18 holes. Sarut Vongchaisit had four birdies throughout the day, matching Schell for the second-most on the team. However, two big numbers prevented the junior from contributing to the team score as he settled for a 78 (+6).

Ole Miss will look to move up the leaderboard tomorrow morning. The Rebels will be paired with No. 11 Florida (+10) and No. 17 Auburn (+15) beginning at 8:30 a.m. CT.
