Jackson Suber Grabs Solo Lead at LSU Invitational

2/27/2021 | Men's Golf

BATON ROUGE, La. – One day after being just one of six players in the field to break par, Ole Miss golfer Jackson Suber used a 3-under 69 to volt to the top of the LSU Invitational leaderboard Saturday. Through 36 holes, Suber sits at 4-under (71-69—140) to hold a one-shot lead heading into tomorrow's final round.

"Suber played a great round of golf today," said head coach Chris Malloy. "He is really in control of his game and look for more of the same tomorrow."

The Tampa, Florida, native kept miscues at a minimum, making just one bogey throughout the round. Suber parred the first five holes before the putter got hot to end his opening nine. Three birdies over Nos. 6-9 sent the junior out in 33 (-3) and atop the leaderboard. Suber stayed in front by grinding out seven straight pars to start the back nine. The streak ended with a birdie on No. 17 to push him to 5-under. A bogey on the difficult closing hole sent Suber back to 4-under, but the Rebel still signed for a 69 (-3) and became the leader in the clubhouse.

Brett Schell shot an even-par 72 to move several spots up the leaderboard and into a tie for 22nd at 3-over (75-72—147). The redshirt-freshman birdied two of his first six holes before a double bogey on the par 4 ninth. He immediately bounced back with a birdie on No. 10 to get back into red figures. Following a bogey at the par 3 14th, Schell tallied four straight pars to remain at level par for the day.

"Brett is close to putting together a really good round of golf as well," said Malloy. "He seems to be getting better each week."

As a team, the Rebels sit in 12th place (299-300—599) with 18 holes to go. No. 11 Florida leads the tournament after a 7-under 281 propelled the Gators into first (298-281—579).

After finishing the fall by winning the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, Suber will look to become medalist in back-to-back tournaments. He tees off Sunday morning (Feb. 28) at 10:50 a.m. CT on No. 10. The Rebels will be paired with No. 12 Georgia and No. 17 Auburn beginning at 10:10 a.m. CT.
