Jackson Suber Goes Back-To-Back, Wins LSU Invitational

Rebel Golfer Wins Second Straight Tournament
BATON ROUGE, La. – Holding the overnight lead, Jackson Suber made sure his name stayed at the top of the leaderboard Sunday afternoon. The Ole Miss golfer produced his third straight under-par round, firing a final round 71 (-1) to capture medalist honors at the LSU Invitational.
Suber finished the week at 5-under (71-69-71—211) for a three-shot victory, his second win in as many starts. The Tampa, Florida, native ended the fall as medalist at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate before starting the spring with the second individual title of his career. He produced a tournament-best 14 birdies over 54 holes.
"I'm so proud of Jackson and the way he played all week," said head coach Chris Malloy. "When he had a couple of bad holes today, he did not let it get to him and bounced right back. That's what champions do, and he deserved the win."
Starting on the back nine, Suber parred his first seven holes before a birdie on No. 17. He did the exact same thing during Saturday's second round, but ended the nine by bogeying the 18th. That didn't happen on Sunday. Instead of giving one back, Suber built his lead with a birdie on No. 18 to make the turn at 2-under and improving to 6-under for the tournament. Birdies kept flying all over the course, pushing Suber to 8-under. He birdied No. 1 and No. 3, giving him four over a five-hole stretch to build a seven-shot lead.
Adversity struck for Suber as he struggled on the fourth and fifth holes, leading to back-to-back double bogeys. With Vanderbilt's Matthew Riedel making an eagle on No. 10 and a birdie on No. 11, Suber's lead was quickly reduced to a single stroke. However, he got back on track with a birdie on the par 5 sixth, doubling his advantage. Suber dominated the par 5s all week, playing them 7-under to pace the field. Three straight pars coming in wrapped up his 1-under round and kept Suber ahead of the pack for another win.
"The course was playing really difficult, and I knew that no one was going to go out and throw up a crazy low number. So I trusted my game plan and my lead to hold up," said Suber. "I had it rolling on the first 12 holes and ran into some trouble on two holes, but I figured out how to close it out on the last stretch."
As a team, the Rebels posted a final round 294 (+6) to move up the leaderboard and into eighth place. Ole Miss (+29) finished ahead of SEC foes Mississippi State (+30), No. 12 Georgia (+35), Kentucky (+36), Missouri (+39), host LSU (+40), Alabama (DNF) as well as Louisiana Tech (+67). No. 6 Illinois won the tournament at 12-over.
"We played better today, but we need to make sure that our off days are not as bad as they were this week," said Malloy. "The guys are looking forward to getting back to work on their game, and we will use the week of practice to get ready for Myrtle Beach."
Cecil Wegener finished the tournament strong with an even-par 72, moving up 12 spots over the last 18 holes (76-86-72—234). The Ridgeland, Mississippi, native stayed level with pars on his first six holes. He followed that start by going bogey, birdie, double bogey to make the turn at 2-over. Wegener bounced back with a trio of pars before making three birdies over four holes.
Veeti Mahonen added a 74 (+2) with a round that featured four birdies, including two on par 5s. Ole Miss found success on the long distance holes, recording seven birdies throughout the day. Four of the five Rebels in the lineup birdied the par 5 sixth.
After a week of practice, the Rebels return to tournament action by heading to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for the General Hackler Championship (March 14-16).
