Suber’s 68 Leads Rebels in Opening Round

3/14/2021 | Men's Golf

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Ole Miss men's golf team returned to action Sunday, and once again it was junior Jackson Suber leading the way. Victorious in the past two tournaments, Suber started off on the right foot with an opening round 68 (-4) at the General Hackler Championship.

Suber is tied for eighth on the individual leaderboard, just two shots off the lead. After firing a 2-over 290 as a team, Ole Miss sits in a tie for 10th with Louisville (-13) holding the lead after 18 holes of play.

"It was certainly good to see Jackson continue his good play. He was solid all day," said head coach Chris Malloy. "Our short games really let us down today in the middle part of our round. We were just too sloppy on some of the easier holes and that killed any momentum we had. The weather conditions will be tough tomorrow, which is exactly what we need to move up the leaderboard."

After starting his round with back-to-back pars, Suber bogeyed the third for his only mistake of the day. The Tampa, Florida, native got the shot right back with a birdie on the par 5 fourth. That was his first of five birdies over his final 15 holes. Making the turn at 1-under, Suber's deuce on the par-3 13th began a stretch of three birdies through a four-hole stretch. Three pars ended Suber's day as he signed for a 68 to lead the Rebels the first round.

Veeti Mahonen was steady throughout the day, making 16 pars on his way to a 72 (E). A birdie at No. 6 and a bogey on No. 12 broke up his streak of pars.

Jack Gnam had an up-and-down round that ended at 2-over (74). He found his success on the par 5s (-3), which included an eagle on 13th. The Ridgeland, Mississippi, native finished strong, playing the final six holes 3-under par that started with the eagle. Following a bogey on No. 14, Gnam bounced back with consecutive birdies before making pars on the last two holes.

Sarut Vongchaisit rounded out the team score with a 76 (+4). His opening round featured a birdie on No. 8.

Ole Miss is slated to begin the second round Monday morning (March 15) with the first tee time set for 7:54 a.m. CT. The Rebels will be starting on the back nine.
