Junior Moves Up One Spot Into a Tie for Seventh
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – With his ninth consecutive round of par-or-better, Jackson Suber moved up the leaderboard to pace the Ole Miss men's golf team at the General Hackler Championship. Suber fired an even-par 72 during Monday's second round, sitting in a tie for seventh heading into tomorrow's final round.
While Suber jumped one spot on the leaderboard, he remained at 4-under (68-72—140) and saw his deficit grow to six shots as he tries to win his third straight tournament. As a team, the flat sticks let the Rebels down all day long. Ole Miss shot 297 (+9) to go to 11-over for the tournament and into 11th place (290-297—587).
"Today was another sloppy round for us," said head coach Chris Malloy. "Anytime you have as many three putts as we did today, it is tough to be successful. Luckily, we have another opportunity tomorrow to climb up the leaderboard."
Beginning on the back nine, Suber's round started steady with five straight pars before a birdie on the par-5 15th. He gave the stroke back by bogeying No. 16, but added back-to-back pars to make the turn at level par. Suber's final nine was not as consistent as his opening side as the junior recorded three birdies, three bogeys and three pars to finish his round. Birdies on No. 7 and No. 9, two of his last three holes, gave Suber a little momentum for tomorrow.
Brett Schell was just behind Suber on Monday, bouncing back with a 73 (+1) after shooting 78 in round one. The redshirt freshman vaulted 19 spots up the leaderboard on moving day, starting with a birdie on his first hole of the day. Schell added three more birdies over his final seven holes, coming in with a 34 (-2).
After making 16 pars in the opening round on his way to a 72, sophomore Veeti Mahonen shot 75 (+3) in round two. The Kirkkonummi, Finland, native recorded 11 pars, five bogeys and two birdies. Both Jack Gnam and Sarut Vongchaisit shot 77 (+5) to complete the Rebels' day.
The Rebels will wrap up the General Hackler Championship tomorrow (Tuesday, March 16), teeing off No. 10 at the Dunes Golf & Beach Club. Beginning at 7:15 a.m. CT, Ole Miss will be paired with Indiana and Miami (OH).
