Rebels Look to Bounce Back in Air Rifle Tomorrow
OXFORD, Miss. – On day one of the Great America Rifle Conference Championship, Ole Miss rifle fired a smallbore team score of 2319. The Rebels currently sit in fifth.
In the virtual match, every team in the conference shot at their home range, leading to a high-scoring first day for some teams. The Rebels filled the firing line and competed in one relay, with each school starting at the same time. With no real matchday environment, Ole Miss had an off day, posting a 2319 in smallbore.
Lea Horvath turned in a perfect 200 prone as she paced the team with a 584, finishing 12th. Kristen Derting followed closely with a 583, the 16th best mark in the match. Jillian Zakrzeski posted a score of 577, and Abby Buesseler fired a 575. Erin Walsh rounded out the counters with a 574.
Kentucky's Mary Tucker led all teams with a smallbore score of 592, earning the GARC Smallbore Individual Champion title. On the team side, West Virginia won the smallbore team crown with a mark of 2346.
Following the conclusion of the smallbore relay, the entire Ole Miss team competed in a final. Zakrzeski looked sharp, leading the Rebels with a 154.9 after 15 shots kneeling. She went on to distance herself from the field in the next 15 shots prone, building a four-point lead over Horvath heading into the standing shots.
Zakrzeski hung on to the victory finishing, with an impressive score of 460.7. Horvath took silver with a 458.0, and Walsh placed third, firing a 442.5.
The Rebels will conclude the championship match tomorrow. The action begins at 8 a.m. CT with the air rifle relay and a final at 10:15 a.m. Sunday's competition will also serve as Senior Day for the Rebels, who will honor Emily Cock, Sophia Cuozzo and Kamilla Kisch for their four years of dedication to the program.
