Rebels to Honor a Trio of Seniors
OXFORD, Miss. – The No. 2 Ole Miss rifle team has one more step to take before competing in the program's first NCAA Championship match in 15 years. This weekend the Rebels will shoot in the Great America Rifle Conference Championship match virtually and honor its senior class.
After an impressive match at home last weekend in its NCAA Qualifier, Ole Miss picked up its seventh conference win of the season and earned a share of the GARC regular season crown. It marked the first conference title in program history for the Rebels, who are looking to lock up a victory in the postseason championship match.
The match will still follow the NCAA Championship format, with the smallbore event on day one and air rifle the following day. All GARC individual and team titles will be awarded based on scores fired during those relays.
Sunday's air rifle competition will also serve as Senior Day for the Rebels, who will honor Emily Cock, Sophia Cuozzo and Kamilla Kisch for their four years of dedication to the program.
Heading into the championship match, the Rebels rank third in the GARC, with average aggregate (4709.6), smallbore (2337.8) and air rifle (2371.8) scores behind West Virginia and Kentucky, who pose the biggest threats.
Ole Miss is led by freshman Lea Horvath, who has paced the team in nine matches this season. She ranks third in the NCAA and second in the conference with an 1187.4 average. Kristen Derting also sits inside the top 10 nationally with an 1178.7 average, a mark that has improved 16.8 points from a season ago.
Juniors Erin Walsh and Jillian Zakrzeski also have had solid seasons. Walsh has looked sharp in her last two matches at home, firing identical career-high scores of 1181, while Zakrzeski posted a career-high 597 in air rifle in the qualifier last weekend. Abby Buesseler rounds out the Rebels' counters. The 2020 All-American has helped guide the team to its first regular season conference title.
The GARC Championship match will not be open to the public, but fans are encouraged to follow along on Twitter for live updates and results. Live scoring will also be available through Megalink and the NCAA Rifle Scorebook.
