Rebels Fall in a Five-Set Battle to Alabama

Three Rebels with 10+ Kills
OXFORD, Miss.— After a strong start, Ole Miss was unable to withstand a comeback from Alabama in a back and forth five-set match from the Gillom Center Friday. Three Rebels totaled 10 or more kills for the first time in a match this season and right-side Samantha Schnitta's recorded her second career double-double with 18 kills and 10 digs.
In the first set Ole Miss (0-9) started off with outside hitter GG Carvacho and the team's first kill of the match at 2-1. Outside Anna Bair added one to tie it up at 4 all, before a 3-0 Ole Miss run gave the team the lead at 7-5. The Rebels continued to extend their lead with Carvacho's second kill to lead the Tide 15-9. Alabama (3-8) worked to cut the deficit with a 2-0 run to trail 20-13 yet were unable to make the comeback as an Anna Bair ace sealed the set 25-13, as the Rebels hit at a .370 clip.
Errors traded back and forth to begin the second set before Carvacho added yet another kill to bring the Rebels up by two at 3-1. Middle blocker Sasha Ratliff and setter Gabby Easton proved to be a strong duo at the net as they teamed up for a block to help Ole Miss strengthen its lead at 6-3. Ole Miss continued with their aggressive offense to take a 10-6 lead, before Alabama cut it to two at 10-8. A quick run from the Crimson Tide brought them within one of the Rebels, before Ole Miss took off on a 3-1 run to lead 16-13. Alabama went on a 4-1 run of their own to tie the set up at 17 all. A back and forth battle ensued, before a 4-0 scoring run from the Tide created a 22-18 deficit for Ole Miss. Carvacho broke up the run, and the Rebels battled back scoring three straight to trail 23-22 before two straight Crimson Tide points allowed them to take the set 25-22.
Schnitta kicked off the third set with a kill, before going back and forth with the Crimson Tide to tie up the set at 3 all. Ole Miss was able to capitalize off of Alabama errors as they worked to cut a 6-3 deficit yet was slowed by a 3-0 UA run. Middle blocker Aubrey Sultemeier's second kill of the match halted the run, to trail 8-5. Back-to-back kills by the Rebels gave the team a spark as they worked their way towards the lead at 13-11. Back and forth kills were traded, as the Rebels trailed by two at 17-15. A comeback ensued with a 3-0 run followed by a Sultemeier ace which gave the Rebels their first lead of the set at 19-18. Two straight Schnitta kills gave the Rebels a two-point advantage as the set began to come to its end, before a 3-0 Alabama run tied the set at 21 all. With eight ties in the set, it came down to the end where the Crimson Tide held the Rebels in a 5-3 run to win the set 26-24.
Alabama began the fourth set with a 3-0 run, before Carvacho ended it with her 10th kill of the match. The Rebels worked to make their way back into the set but struggled with Alabama's strong offense. Two-straight kills from Ole Miss cut the deficit to three at 12-9. A 5-2 run propelled the Rebels back into the conversation to trail by two at 19-17. Three straight points from the Rebs gave them a 22-20 lead, before Alabama tied things up at 23 all. A Sasha Ratliff kill made it set point, before a Carvacho and Ratliff duo block took the set for the Rebs 25-23 to complete the comeback.
The Rebels came out swinging in the fifth set with two straight kills, before the two teams went back and forth to tie the set at four all. Alabama began to take control leading 9-6 before an Ole Miss called timeout. The Crimson Tide controlled the set the rest of the way, ultimately taking it 15-11 and the match 3-2.
Ole Miss returns to the Gillom Center tomorrow for the series finale against Alabama at 12 p.m. CT. The match will air national on the on SEC Network.
