Johnson, Swann Tally Top 5 Finishes in Sarasota
SARASOTA, Fla. – The Ole Miss women's golf team tallied the third-lowest tournament score in school history (284-279-288—851), but it wasn't enough to hold off a red-hot Oklahoma State team as the Rebels finished second at the Heroes Ladies Intercollegiate Tuesday.
Ole Miss held a four shot lead headed into the third and final day, but the Cowgirls rallied to take home team honors despite the Rebels shooting a final round 288 (E). Senior Julia Johnson took home second place individual honors, while Kennedy Swann finished tied for third.
"This one is going to sting a little bit, but it helps realize what we need to work on moving forward," head coach Kory Henkes said. "Overall, to finish second in a great field and have Julie and Kennedy tally top 5 finishes, is definitely something that we can be proud of.
"We left some shots out there over the last few days, but it's better for this to happen early in the season rather than later. I think you learn more from getting second place in a tournament than you do from winning. We're just going to reflect back on our rounds and move forward."
Johnson carded a 71 (-1) Tuesday to finish all three rounds under par at The Founders Golf Club in Sarasota. The St. Gabriel, Louisiana, native finished at 9-under (67-69-71—207), tied for the third-lowest individual 54-hole score in program history. She led the field in par-4 scoring (-9) and was second in birdies (16). It was Johnson's 12th career top-5 finish.
Swann, a senior from Austin, Texas, finished with a final round 73 (+1) and wrapped up the tournament at 6-under (68-69-73—210), the second-best 54-hole score of her Ole Miss career. Swann was sitting at 3-over through 14 holes Tuesday, but recorded two birdies in her final four holes to finish the day at 1-over.
Andrea Lignell tallied her third top-15 finish of the season with a three-day total of 218 (73-72-73). Junior Ellen Hume tied Johnson for the best round of the day by a Rebel with a 1-under, 71. The Whitwell, England, native finished in a tie for 35th overall (76-77-71—224).
Sophomore Chiara Tamburlini was also in action for the Rebels, shooting a 4-over, 76, to finish in a tie for 39th (80-69-76—225).
