Softball Shuts Out State to Open SEC Play

3/13/2021 | Softball

Borgen Pitches Fourth-Straight Shutout, Sets Scoreless Innings Streak Record

OXFORD, Miss. – Behind another sparkling outing in the circle from Anna Borgen and a power packed punch in the middle innings, Ole Miss (17-6, 1-0 SEC) opened up SEC play with a bang, defeating Mississippi State (15-6, 0-1 SEC) 6-0 to run its winning streak to nine games.

During the game both teams sported teal-themed uniforms, supporting awareness for ovarian cancer and in honor of former Mississippi State player Alex Wilcox, who heroically fought the deadly disease until her passing in 2018.

Continuing a run of play rivaling the best in the nation, Borgen was once again nearly untouchable on the rubber. The senior tossed her fourth-consecutive complete game shutout, extending her scoreless innings streak to a program-record 31 frames. The lefty allowed just a pair of hits, the fewest for MSU in a game this season, striking out four.

On the other side, the Rebels registered just six hits of their own but used them to full advantage, capitalizing on a pair of home runs to garner a sizeable lead.

While Borgen kept Ole Miss in the game in the early innings while the offense found its footing, the Rebs hit the ground running after breaking up Emily Williams no-hit bid in the fourth. Blaise Biringer led off the inning with a single and after a Jessica Puk walk, Abbey Latham took a pitch for a ride to center field, clubbing a three-run shot to push the Rebels ahead.

Later in the frame, Mikalya Allee smacked a sharp single into left field, allowing Sydney Gutierrez to trot home easily and Tate Whitley tacked on another run with a sacrifice fly, bringing home Autumn Gillespie to make it 5-0.

Paige Smith kept her hot bat going and put the cherry on top in the fifth inning, demolishing a 1-0 offering for a no-doubt leadoff dinger in the fifth, her seventh of the season. Borgen and the defense kept the Bulldog offense at bay the rest of the way, moving to 1-0 in SEC play for the first time since 2014.
