Softball Completes Sweep of Mississippi State

3/15/2021 | Softball

Rebels Register First-Ever Series Sweep Over the Bulldogs

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss (18-7, 3-0 SEC) finished out a dominant in-state series on Monday, run ruling Mississippi State (15-8, 0-3 SEC) 8-0 in five innings to complete the first sweep over the Bulldogs in program-history.

Savannah Diederich and Ann Borgen combined to shutout the Bulldogs for the second time in three games. Diederich earned the win, tossing four scoreless with two hits allowed in four innings in the starting role. Much like Sunday, Borgen came in and slammed the door shut, pitching a scoreless relief inning to garner the save.

Offensively, Autumn Gillespie led the charge, reaching in all three plate appearances while going 2-for-2 with three runs scored and three runs driven in. Both Mikayla Allee and Tate Whitley posted 1-for-1 days at the plate, with Allee scoring twice and driving in another run and Whitley bringing home a pair.

Gillespie got the party started in a big way, clobbering a pitch over the middle high over the fence in left center and off the light pole for a leadoff big fly. Whitley Followed with a frozen rope double to the wall in center, bringing Allee all the way around from first.

After Whitley brought home Gillespie with a sacrifice fly in the fourth to extend the lead to 3-0, Mississippi State responded with a threat in the fifth. With two runners in scoring position and no outs, the Rebs turned to Borgen in the circle to get out of danger and the senior came through with flying colors, collecting three outs to keep the shutout intact.

Keeping the momentum going, the Rebels blew the doors off in the fifth. Sydney Gutierrez got scoring started in the inning with an RBI infield single to first base to score pinch runner Maddi Banks and Gillespie followed with a triple inside the right field line, plating Latham and Kelsha Loftin behind her. Allee then slashed a single through the right side to scratch Gillespie accros and with the winning run on third, Blaise Biringer legged out an infield single, scoring the eighth run of the night and bringing the run rule into effect.
