Rebels Tie School Record for Combined Entries to NCAA Indoor Meet

INDIANAPOLIS – Ole Miss men's and women's track & field matched a program record for combined entries to the indoor national meet, earning 10 total berths to the NCAA Indoor Championships on the first qualifying lists released by the NCAA late Tuesday night.

Medical scratches can be applied until next Tuesday, but Ole Miss will have at least these 10 Rebels represent at the indoor national meet, which will be held March 11-13 in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Ole Miss earned a program record seven entries in men's competition, putting the Rebels in strong scoring position. Of those seven, five come from the Rebel men's distance squad that scored four SEC gold medals and two meet records at the SEC Indoor Championships last week.

Leading the way are the dynamic duo of All-American senior Waleed Suliman and reigning SEC cross country champion, Mario Garcia Romo. Both are coming off of SEC individual wins and as members on the SEC title winning distance medley relay team, which enters the national meet with the fourth-best seed time at a school-record 9:29.35. That time, which was run by Suliman (1200-meter), freshman Marcus Dropik (400-meter), senior Everett Smulders (800-meter) and Garcia Romo (mile), was also an SEC meet record and constituted the seventh DMR win for Ole Miss in the last eight years. Nationally, Ole Miss has qualified in the DMR five of the last six years and earned First-Team All-American status three times: an NCAA title in 2017, a third-place finish in 2016 and an eighth-place finish in 2019.

Garcia Romo and Suliman will also both run in the 3K, with reigning SEC champ Garcia Romo entering with the No. 3 seed time at his school record 7:48.40, and Suliman No. 12 at 7:54.57. Suliman will look to triple for the Rebels in Fayetteville, as he will also represent Ole Miss in the men's mile at the No. 4 seed time of 3:55.60.

All-American senior Allen Gordon earns his second career trip to the indoor national meet, and he will also have a busy stay with qualifying marks in both the high jump (sixth, 2.19m/7-02.25) and long jump (13th, 7.72m/25-04.00). Gordon is the first Rebel men's athlete to double in both the high jump and long jump in indoor history, and he is the first jumper to double regardless since Olympian Ricky Robertson pulled off the high jump/triple jump double in 2013.

Junior Baylor Franklin punched his first career ticket to NCAAs with the No. 14 time in the 800-meter at 1:48.59.

On the women's side, Ole Miss packs a powerful 1-2 punch in the weight throw. All-Americans Jasmine Mitchell and Shey Taiwo own the top two throws in the NCAA and the sixth and seventh best throws worldwide this season, respectively, both coming from the SEC Indoor Championships last week. Mitchell won the SEC title at her NCAA-leading toss of 23.24m (76-03.00), and Taiwo took runner-up honors at her PR of 23.04m (75-07.25). At the SEC Championships, the duo became the first teammates in NCAA history to throw 23 meters in the same season. This will be Mitchell's second trip to the NCAA meet, while this will be Taiwo's third in a row.

Also qualifying for the Rebel women is the distance medley relay squad of Loral Winn, Toni Glatz, Sintayehu Vissa and Maddie King, who demolished the Ole Miss record to finish fourth in a heated DMR final at the SEC Championships. Ole Miss enters with the No. 8 seed time of 11:04.27, which shattered the previous school record by 12 seconds. This will be the first time an Ole Miss women's team has ever sent a DMR to the national meet in program history.

Competition runs in Fayetteville from March 11-13, and fans will be able to watch on the ESPN family of networks.
