Ole Miss Loses Two-Run Lead Late
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Ole Miss (18-9, 3-2 SEC) held a two-run lead much of the afternoon but was unable to hold it, falling to No. 17 Arkansas (22-3, 5-0 SEC) 3-2 in eight innings at Bogle Park.
Savannah Diederich took the loss, pitching 7.1 innings and allowing three runs on five hits, striking out eight.
After a pair of scoreless frames for both sides, Ole Miss put together a two-out rally to jump ahead in the third. After Paige Smith legged out an infield single, Abbey Latham took a big hack and sent it to the gap, clearing the wall in left-center for a two-run bomb to put the Rebels ahead 2-0.
The two-run lead held until the sixth frame, when the Razorbacks struck for a pair of runs to even the score. Following a Hannah McEwen leadoff home run, Danielle Gibson slashed an RBI double down the right line, bringing Braxton Burnside around from first. Despite surrendering the lead, Diederich did well to bounce back and collect three-straight outs to avoid further damage.
After Ole Miss left two runners in scoring position in the top half of the seventh, Arkansas nearly walked it off in the bottom half, with Tate Whitley hauling in McEwen's deep fly right at the center field wall, forcing the game into extra innings.
With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Arkansas's Danielle Gibson sent a high fly to left-center that Jessica Puk was just unable to reach, clearing the wall for a walk-off solo home run.
Quick Hits
• Abbey Latham's third inning home run was the 27th of her career, moving the senior into solo possession of third place in the all-time Rebel record book.
• Savannah Diederich's 7.1 innings set a new career high.
