Softball’s Lead Slips Late in 3-2 Loss at Arkansas

3/21/2021 | Softball

No. 17 Razorbacks Win Second Straight on Walk-Off Homer

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Rebels held a late lead but could not hold it as Ole Miss fell to No. 17 Arkansas 3-2 in eight innings at Bogle Park to finish out the series on Sunday.

The Rebels (18-10, 3-3 SEC) wasted no time in getting going, with Tate Whitley and Blaise Biringer leading off the game with a single and double, respectively, to immediately put runners in scoring position. Paige Smith then came through, lifting a fly ball high in the air and plenty deep to bring Whitley in and give Ole Miss a 1-0 lead.

Ole Miss added on in the fourth, with Abbey Latham leading off with an opposite field double and Jessica Puk clutching up with a sharp RBI single just inside the third base line, doubling the Rebel advantage.

For the second game in a row the Razorbacks (23-3, 6-0 SEC) were able to battle back in the sixth, tying the game on a wild pitch and a sacrifice bunt to scratch across a pair of runs.

After Ole Miss left a runner at second in the top half, Arkansas put together a threat of its own, loading the bases with one out. Ole Miss was able to get out of the jam, however, turning a 5-2-3 double play to get out of danger.

Unfortunately, the momentum didn't last long as the Rebels were retired in order in the eighth and Keely Huffine hit a solo home run to left to give the Razorbacks their second walk-off win over Ole Miss in as many days.

Quick Hits
• The RBIs for Paige Smith and Jessica Puk were the 19th of the season for the pair, extending their shared team lead.
