Softball’s Early Lead Holds Up Against Southern Miss

3/24/2021 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss (19-10) jumped ahead early and never looked back on Sunday, defeating Southern Miss (18-11) 4-1 in a midweek tussle at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.

The victory was the 12th-straight in Oxford this season, setting the Ole Miss record for consecutive home wins within a single season.

The Rebs got going early, taking advantage of a dropped fly ball to open scoring on Autumn Gillespie's RBI infield single. Ole Miss tacked on two more in the second on a wild pitch and a Blaise Biringer ground out, putting the home team up 3-0 heading to the third.

Southern Miss got one back in the third frame but Ole Miss worked to avoid a big inning after the Golden Eagles loaded the bases with no outs. Following a sacrifice fly, Biringer snared a liner up the middle and continued in stride to beat the runner back to second base for an inning ending double play.

The Rebs got the run back in the fifth, finishing off a 2-out rally with a Kelsha Loftin pinch hit single up the middle, scoring Gillespie from second base to recapture the three-run advantage.

Southern Miss attempted to immediately respond, putting the first two runners on the sixth on via walks. However, the Rebels again utilized a double play to get out of dodge, with Paige Smith spearing a hot shot down the line and tossing to Biringer at second to double off the runner and retire the side.

Borgen came out of the pen to close things out in the seventh and got the job done, securing her third save of the season.

Quick Hits
• In addition to being the 12th-straight home win this season, the victory was the 23rd in a row in Oxford all together for the Rebels.
• Ole Miss has also won 36-consecutive non-conference home games, last falling in Oxford to a non-con foe in 2018.
Anna Borgen's save was her third of the season, the second most in a single season in program history.
Autumn Gillespie went 2-for-3 at the plate, her second multi-hit game of the season.
